BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
With the Gulf South Conference Championship looming Saturday at Veteran's Park, coach Doug Pinkerton and the Delta State University Lady Statesmen Cross Country team is headed into the race with a quiet confidence.

"We've had a very good year so far, but we all want a solid finish to the season," added Pinkerton.  "The year started with a win in our home meet and we've built upon that each and every week to get to this point in the season."

Led by senior Kristin Williams and freshman Ashley Carillo, the Lady Statesmen have posted quality finishes in every competition this season.

"I've been extremely proud of the team this season," added Pinkerton.  "We've battled adversity from injuries, competed on drenched courses and we're still fighting to the finish."

That determination has the club prepared for its toughest challenge of the year - the GSC finale.

"I think we've ran a very difficult schedule that has helped prepare us for what we will face Saturday.  Every team there wants the same thing and that's a win.  Hopefully, we'll compete to the best of our ability," concluded Pinkerton.

The GSC Championship will start Saturday morning at 9 a.m. on a rain-soaked Veteran's Park course in Hoover, Ala., a suburb of Birmingham.  Complete post race results and commentary will be available on GoStatesmen.com immediately following the event.
