CLEVELAND – The Delta State men’s and women’s basketball teams both slid in the NCAA Division II South Region rankings that were released Wednesday.

The Lady Statesmen (16-2, 5-2 Gulf South Conference) dropped one spot to No. 3 in the South Region behind then-undefeated GSC foe Arkansas Tech and Fort Valley State (19-1), which competes in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Arkansas Tech (18-1, 5-1 GSC) holds the top spot in the region despite being upset at Christian Brothers earlier this week. The Golden Suns handed the Lady Statesmen their first of the season Jan. 23.

Earlier this week, the Lady Statesmen slid six spots to No. 12 in the nationwide ESPN/USA Today Division poll, released by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

On the men’s side, the Statesmen dropped two spots to No. 7 in the South Region rankings despite picking up two victories last week.

Delta State (15-4, 6-1 GSC) were bypassed by Florida Southern (13-2), which climbed two spots to No. 4, and Barry University (9-5), which climbed two spots to No. 6.

The Lady Statesmen and Statesmen return to action Thursday when they host Ouachita Baptist to open the second round of GSC play. Tipoff times from Sillers Coliseum are 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.
