KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Basketball Coaches announced today the NABC Division II All-District teams and coaches, recognizing the best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes and coaches in the division.
Delta State's Chad Akins (Madison, Miss./Madison Central HS) was the lone Statesman to earn South Region honors. The senior point guard was one of three Gulf South Conference players named to the All-South Region Second Team, joining Valdosta State's Ricardo Lewis and Zack Warner of Christian Brothers.
Akins averaged 9.9 points and 7.3 assists per game in helping guide the Statesmen to a 19-8 record and their second consecutive appearance in the GSC Tournament. His 7.3 assists led the GSC and he tallied 154 in 21 games.
Akins finished his career with 544 assists, which places him second on the school's all-time list behind Scott Nagy, who dished out 559 over his career, which ended in 1988. Akins missed six games due to injury and illness throughout the season.
The All-South Region First Team featured two players from the GSC – Valdosta State's Tyrone Curnell and Arkansas Tech's Brandon Friedel. Valdosta State upset national No. 1 Arkansas Tech 72-60 en route to the South Region championship.
Arkansas Tech's Mark Downey was named the region's Coach of the Year.
Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, the student athletes named to the All-District teams represent the finest basketball players across America. The 88 student-athletes, from eight districts, are now eligible for the State Farm® Coaches' Division II All-America teams, selected by the NABC.
