Lady Statesmen season ends in heartbreaking fashion

CLEVELAND-The Delta State University softball team saw its season come to a heartbreaking end following a pair of losses at the Gulf South Conference Tournament at Greenbrook Park in Southaven, Miss.

The Lady Statesmen gave up five runs in the bottom of the third in a 5-0 loss to Alabama Huntsville in game one.

In game two, DSU held a 3-1 lead going into the top of the seventh, before Henderson State scored three runs to eliminate the Lady Statesmen with a 4-3 win.

Alabama Huntsville capitalized on three straight base hits, followed by three straight walks en route to a five run third inning.

That was all UAH starting pitcher Whitney Gilbert needed.

The Lady Statesmen were held to five hits, and left seven runners on base. The Lady Chargers managed only six hits against DSU starter Edie Oliver. UAH left six runners stranded.

Oliver (14-15) took the loss. Oliver allowed five runs on six hits. She walked five, and struck out three.

Gilbert (18-4) earned the win. She allowed five hits, with three walks and two strikeouts.

UAH's Sam Deep was the only player for either team that had multiple base hits, finishing 2-for-4.

A Julia Schulz solo homerun opened the scoring at 1-0 in the top of the first of game two for the Lady Reddies. 

The Lady Statesmen then stormed back, taking a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. DSU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back RBI base hits by Chelsea Carr and Paige Silverthorn. Courtney Clark's infield single scored pinch runner Kate Moreland from second to give DSU the 3-1 lead.

With one out, and runners on first and second, in the top of the seventh, Brittnie Dean hit a grounder to third base. Taylor Hughes touched third base, but her throw to first got away from Brittany Gonzales. Two runners scored on the play, tying the game at 3-3

HSU then took the lead with a clutch RBI base hit by Amber Klug.

DSU got a two out hit from Oliver in the bottom of the seventh, but Clark fouled out to third base to end the game.

Oliver (14-16) took the loss. The senior All GSC performer allowed four runs, three earned, with two strikeouts. HSU managed nine hits against the left hander.

Melissa Decker (12-7) got the win for HSU. Decker allowed three runs on seven hits.

Oliver (2-for-3) was the only DSU player with multiple hits.

The Lady Statesmen finished the 2010 campaign with an 27-27 mark.
