CLEVELAND
— The 2010-2011 Delta State University women's basketball schedule will features 28 games, including two exhibition games against perennial NCAA Division I powers Vanderbilt and Louisiana Tech.

“We're extremely excited about the upcoming season,” Lady Statesmen head coach Sandra Rushing stated. “When Tennessee asked us to move this year's game to 2011-2012, it allowed us to search for another Division I game and we lucked out were able to schedule Vandy and Louisiana Tech.”

Delta State will open the season on Thursday, Nov. 4 in Nashville, Tenn., against Vanderbilt in historic Memorial Gym. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

Six days later, coach Rushing and the Lady Statesmen will travel to Ruston, La., to face the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Samuel M. Thomas Assembly Center.

“We face a tremendously challenging schedule this year and our ladies are excited about the opportunity to contend for the GSC title and NCAA national championship,” Rushing added.

The Lady Statesmen will also return to hosting annual “Lloyd Clark Classic” on November 19-20 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The Lloyd Clark Classic will feature several NCAA Division II contenders, including Carson Newman College, Lincoln Memorial University and Southern Arkansas University.

The non-conference schedule also includes several games against Gulf South Conference teams from the East Division. The Lady Statesmen will travel to Alabama-Huntsville, North Alabama and West Alabama, while hosting West Georgia, West Florida and Valdosta State at Sillers Coliseum.

DSU will also welcome a familiar opponent from the 2008-09 NCAA Elite in San Antonio, Texas, West Texas A&M to the friendly confines of Sillers Coliseum on Dec. 31.

The GSC West Division schedule will feature 14 games and get underway Jan. 8, 2011, as the Lady Statesmen host Southern Arkansas.

The Lady Statesmen returns a pair of preseason All-Americans in senior point guard Sarita “Bug” Cooper and junior center Veronica Walker. The duo led the green-and-white to a 27-4 overall record last season and a spot in the NCAA “Sweet 16.”

DSU also returns senior shooting guard Moe Bell and small forward Shameka Russell to a squad that was left wanting when the final horn sounded in 2009-2010.

“We've got a great group of players coming back this year and an influx of talent that really fills some needed roles on the team,” Rushing concluded.

Season tickets will be available starting October 1. For more information on season tickets, please contact the DSU Athletic Ticket Office at (662) 846-4300.
