STATESMEN AND LADY STATESMEN CAP 2005-06 SEASON WITH STRONG SHOWING AT NCAA'S

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Coach Brian Hein and his staff had one goal in mind for the 2005-06 swimming and diving season - win the NCAA title. As the season came to a close in Indianapolis at the NCAA Championships, the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen fell a little short of that original goal. The Statemen finished the year 10th at the finals, while the Lady Statesmen were 14th.

"This has been an amazing season for us, but injuries and the toughest schedule in DII caught up with us at the end," said DSU head coach Brian Hein. "Our team stayed focused and I believe we learned an awful lot about each other. I also believe we have the nucleus to attain those goals next season!"

Hein is referring to the young crop of swimmers and divers the coachinf staff has stockpiled over the last few seasons led by sophomore Jennifer Artichuk and freshman Tiago Olivera. Both placed in the top three in their signature event at the NCAA Championships and Hein believes they can be catalyst for a run next season.

"Tiago and Jennifer really give us a solid base for next season, but I do not want to take away anything from the upper classmen that have helped build this program over the last four year," said Hein.

Jennifer Artichuk placed third in the 100-Butterfly after claiming second place a year ago. The sophomore from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada finished the race in 56.52 seconds. The talented sophomore also placed in the top five in the 200-Butterfly with a time of 2:05.54. The mark was good for fourth place.

Tiago Olivera also posted to top eight times. The freshman from Rio de Janerio, Brazil turned in a time of 46.23 seconds in the 100-Freestyle and a 1:41.23 in the 200-Freestyle. Both times were good for eighth place.

Men’s senior Kris Koepp received a ninth place finish in the men’s 100-Butterfly with a time of 50.44 seconds and the men's 400-Medley relay placed sixth. Led by seniors Kris Koepp and Mert Saygin, junior Trohn Trabona and freshman Tiago Oliveira, the Statesmen posted a time of 3:23.97.

The men had a total of 125 points, good for a 10th place finish. NSISC champs Drury took home the top spot with 649 points.

The Lady Statesmen finished 14th with 65 total points. NSISC season champs Truman State took home first place honors with 664 points.
