SWD 2006-07 ArchiveMarch 16, 2007 Statesmen sit 14th, Lady Statesmen 19th after day two of NCAA Championships BUFFALO, NY- After a day’s rest, the Lady Statesmen kicked off day two earning a much needed 25 points that solidified a 19th place ranking in the 2007 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The Statesmen climbed to 14th climbing their total to 32 after two days.
March 15, 2007 Statesmen and Lady Statesmen wrap up day one of NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships BUFFALO, NY- With day one in the books at the 2007 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Delta State University had a competitive afternoon on the men’s side, while the Lady Statesmen have yet to swim. The Statesmen have a combined 15 points good for 16th place out of the 26 team field. Drury leads the pack with 152.

February 17, 2007 Truman State claims women's title; Missouri-Rolla holds off Ouachita Baptist for men's crown CLEVELAND - The New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships concluded Saturday with Truman State edging Delta State for the women's title, and Missouri-Rolla holding off Ouachita Baptist for the men's crown. "This was easily the best championships the league has ever had," said DSU Director of Aquatics Ronnie Mayers. Women's Final Standings: Men's Final Standing's February 16, 2007 Record-setting night for the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen at NSISC Championships CLEVELAND- The Delta State University swimming and diving teams broke the record books Friday night to cap off day three of the NSISC championships at the DSU Aquatic Center. The Lady Statesmen remained in second place in the overall standings thanks in part to first place finishes by Jennifer Artichuk (100-butterflly) and Kasey Perkins (100-breastroke), giving the Lady Statesmen 1210 points heading into day four. Truman State (1337) remains in first, while Ouachita Baptist (870), Henderson State (673) and Incarnate Word (451) round out the top five. The Statesmen (753) climbed to number four in the standings after wins by Fernando Reis (200-freestyle) and Trohn Trabona (100-breststorke). Missouri-Rolla (1149) climbs to first, followed closely by Ouachita Baptist (1084). Truman State (943) and Henderson State (722) round out the top five. “This was a great night by our swimmers on both teams,” head coach Brian Hein said, “The relays swam extremely well and I’m very proud that we were able to set new records tonight.” All four victories by Delta State rewrote the history books. Artichuk’s time of 56.86 in the 100-butterfly was a new conference championship record. Reis broke another record in the 200-freestyle with a time of 1.39.92, good for a new NSISC championship and school record. In the 100-breaststroke, Perkins set a new NSISC and school record finishing in 1.05.44. Trabona set a new NSISC championship and school record in the 100-breaststroke with a time of 0.57.10. The championships conclude Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and conclude with the finals beginning at 5 p.m.
February 15, 2007 Action heating up at NSISC Championships CLEVELAND- Day two of the NSISC featured fantastic swimming and even faster times as the short distance relays and IM’s highlighted the meet. However, the day didn’t fare well for the Delta State squads as the Lady Statesmen fell into second place in the overall standings while the Statesmen dropped to fifth.
February 14, 2007 Lady Statesmen in lead at NSISC Championships; Statesmen sitting in fourth CLEVELAND - After day one of the NSISC Championships, the Lady Statesmen of Delta State University sit in first place with 192 points. The Statesmen are currently fourth with 100 points through day one's events. "We had an excellent start tonight," said DSU head coach Brian Hein." "The NSISC Championships will only get tougher, and I know our teams are ready to step up." Dawn Thompson led the Statesmen to their highest finish on the night in the 1000-yard freestyle with a sixth place finish clocked at 10:52.78, followed closely by Molly Bates and Rebecca Glass. Ryan Crisco picked up an eighth place finish for the Statesmen in the same event with a time of 10:02.44. The Lady Statesmen led the charge on the 200- medley relay picking a second place finish as well. The Statesmen picked up a solid fifth place in their 200-medley relay. The NSISC Championships will continue Thursday with prelims at 10 a.m. followed by finals at 6 p.m. February 13, 2007 Statesmen and Lady Statesmen set for stiff test at NSISC Championships CLEVELAND - All the hard work, pain and early morning practices are about to be put to the test as the Delta State University Swimming and Diving teams get set for the 18th annual New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships which begin Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the DSU Aquatic Center. Hannah Willis is making her first appearance in the NCAA championships following a solid year in the in the backstroke and free-style events. She posted a top-time of 1.00.61 in the 100-backsroke versus Henderson State. January 27, 2007 Aqua Statesmen and Lady Statesmen dominate dual meet at Henderson State DSU at HSU Results January 20, 2007 DELTA STATE CLAIMS MEET SWEEP CLEVELAND- Once again, the winner of the meet would come down to the last race; this time, the Statesmen would not fall short. Coming off a split decision with Centenary College last week, the Delta State men’s and women’s swimming teams tamed the visiting Tigers of Ouachita Baptist at the DSU Aquatic Center. The men claimed a 56-55 victory, while the women finished with a 58-53 win. The men’s 200 yard freestyle was the least event and it was a thriller. Junior Jessie Newsome and freshman Alex Barillas started off well keeping neck-in-neck with the two Tiger squads. Senior Tyler Godwin got a good start off the platform and never looked back, giving the lead to the Statesmen allowing senior Trohn Trabona to clean up the leg of the race and take home the final points. Head coach Brian Hein was pleased with today’s result, “For us to come in here and get two big wins against them was a big momentum for us coming into the conference meet.” OBU has proved in the past they are one the top swimming programs in the nation last season, with the men ranked fourth and the women sixth respectively heading into nationals. Freshman Dawn Thompson highlighted the victory with two wins of her own on the women’s team. The Schomberg, Ontario native finished with the top time in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events. Sophomore Ashley Thompson, junior Jen Artichuk and senior Rebecca Cid all finished with the top times in their race. Sophomore Fernando Reis continues to prove why he is one of the top swimmers in the country, finishing first in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events. He swam great today,” remarked Hein, “he swam some personal bests and season times, so we are very excited for where he is right now. Freshman Roman Sereda also had a good day, topping out in the 100 butterfly and the 200 medley. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen travel to Henderson State next weekend in preparation for the NSISC Championships that will showcase seven of the top 15 teams in Division II swimming.

DSU Swimming & Diving Alumni Form December 18, 2006 MISSOURI STATE ROLLS TO VICTORIES AT DELTA STATE'S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS INVITATIONAL CLEVELAND - Missouri State University completed a dominating three-day effort claiming victories in the men's and women's meets at the annual Delta State Christmas Invitational on Monday. MSU totaled 919 points in the women's meet and 913 in the men's meet at the DSU Aquatics Center. The University of Tampa claimed second place in both meets, while Delta State placed third. "We had really great competition in here this weekend, and I believe this meet will only help to prepare us for conference later in the year," said DSU head coach Brian Hein. "The plus side is the number of athletes we qualified for the NCAA Championships this weekend." The Statesmen qualified three individuals and one relay team for NCAA play. Fernando Reis (500-Free), Geoff Winkler (200-Breast), and Trohn Trabona (100-Breast) qualified as individuals, while the men's 400-Medley relay also topped the NCAA required time. The 400-relay team is made up of Steve Posthumus, Roman Sereda, Trohn Trabona, and Fernando Reis. The Lady Statesmen's 400-Medley Relay and 200-Medley Relay also qualified for the NCAAs. Hannah Willis, Ashley Thompson, Jennifer Artichuk, and Summer Moberly comprise the 400-Medley team. Willis, Kasey Perkins, Artichuk and Rebecca Cid make up the 200 team. Delta State's Fernando Reis was also the "High Point Swimmer" for the 2006 Christmas Invitational with 60 points. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen return to the pool on january 18 at Centenary College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Complete results are listed below: December 17, 2006 INTENSITY PICKS UP IN DAY TWO OF DELTA STATE CHRISTMAS INVITATIONAL CLEVELAND - Everyone in attendance on Sunday at the annual Delta State Christmas Invitational could feel the intensity in the air. Missouri State University continues to lead the event, but the University of Tampa and Delta State University both made strides on Sunday at the DSU Aquatics Center. In the women's competition, MSU leads Tampa by 26.5 points heading into the final day of events. MSU has totaled 628 points through Saturday with Tampa amassing 601.5. Delta State is in third with 534.5. Missouri State holds a comfortable lead heading into Monday on the men's side. The Bears have 632 points after Saturday's events. Tampa is second with 519 and Delta State is third with 418. A number of individuals on all three teams have eclipsed NCAA Championship qualfying times over the past two days. Complete results are listed below. The third and final day of competition will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday. Finals will start at 4 p.m. at the DSU Aquatics Center. The Statesmen came in at No. 3 in this week's rankings with 229.62 poll points, while the Lady Statesmen were ranked No. 11 (207.69). The University of California-San Diego held down the top spot in the men's (237.54) and women's polls (233.81). November 11, 2006 DELTA STATE DOMINATES RHODES WITH DUAL MEET SWEEP AT THE DSU AQUATICS CENTER CLEVELAND - The Delta State University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Rhodes College in a dual meet Saturday at the Delta State University Aquatics Center. The Lady Statesmen defeated the Lady Lynx by a final score of 124-74. DSU won four events with the help of junior Jennifer Artichuk. The Ottawa, Ontario native took first in the 200-IM and helped anchor the Lady Statesmen to a first place finish in the 200-Medley. The Statesmen crushed the Lynx 118-39. Trohn Trabona and Fernando Reis helped lead the Statesmen to victory as Trabona took first in both the 50-Free and the 100-Butterfly. November 8, 2006 DELTA STATE’S FERNANDO REIS HONORED BY COLLEGESWIMMING.COM CLEVELAND— Fernando Reis, a sophomore All-American on the Delta State University swimming and diving team, has been named “Swimmer of the Week” by CollegeSwimming.com. It is the first honor for speedster from Rio De Janerio, Brazil this season. November 3, 2006 BEARS SWIM PAST AQUA STATESMEN AND LADY STATESMEN CLEVELAND – Delta State head coach Brian Hein was happy to end the gauntlet his squads have endured for the last three weeks. Friday’s meet versus Missouri State was the third in a row versus a top-25 NCAA DI opponent. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen once again held their own against the nation’s finest Friday, dropping a pair of narrow defeats at the Delta State Aquatic Center. The Lady Statesmen fell 158-140, while the Statesmen lost 197-92. “We swam well, especially the ladies,” said Hein. “They competed with everything they had and I am extremely pleased with their effort.” Hein added, “The men worked hard today as well, but we just missed a few breaks or the scores would have been much better.” The Lady Statesmen nearly pulled off the upset falling by just 18 points. Ashley Thompson, Hannah Willis and Jennifer Artichuk led the Lady Statesmen with outstanding performances versus MSU. Ashley Thompson claimed victories the 100-Breaststroke with a time of 1:07.22 and the 200-Breaststroke with a 2:24.99. Hannah Willis took the 200-Backstroke with a 2:07.74, while Jennifer Artichuk won the 100-Butterfly (:57.51) and the 200-Butterfly (2:09.26). Jessie Lockwood was also impressive on the boards for the Lady Statesmen. Lockwood won 3-Meter diving with a 211.20 and placed third in the 1-Meter with a 196.73. The Statesmen also put up a strong effort against one of the nation’s top teams. Fernando Reis stole the show once again. The sophomore from Rio de Janerio, Brazil won the 200-Free with a 1:41.82 and the 500-Free with a blistering 4:41.06. Roman Sereda took the 100-Free with a :48.64. October 28, 2006 DELTA STATE ENJOYS MEASURE OF SUCCESS AT LSU BATON ROUGE, La. - The Delta State University swimming and diving team gave it their all against Louisiana State University on Saturday. The aqua statesmen fell to the Division I Tigers 175.5 to 108.5, while the Lady Statesmen fell 181 to 106 to the Lady Tigers. Fernando Reis, a sophomore from Rio de Janerio, Brazil, finished first in the 500-Freestyle for the Statesmen with a time of 4:50.88. Dawn Thomson, a freshman from Schomberg, Ontario took first in the 200-IM with a 2:16.20. Amanda Guidry wrapped it up for the the Lady Statesmen. The freshman from Cut Off, Louisiana took first in the 200-Butterfly with a time of 2:11.00. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen hit the pool once again as they face Missouri State on November 3 at the Delta State University Aquatics Center. October 20, 2006 DELTA STATE POSTS SOLID FINISH IN DUAL MEET AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Coach Brian Hein knew the early part of the 2006-07 schedule was going to be a challenge with Delta State Swimming and Diving facing three NCAA Division I programs in a row. Friday the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen finished strong against one of the Southeastern Conference’s top programs in the University of Alabama. The Crimson Tide men’s team won 166.50 to 123.50, while the women claimed a 161.00 to 128.00 victory over the Lady Statesmen.

October 14, 2006 WESTERN KENTUCKY CLAIMS SWEEP OF DELTA STATE AT DSU AQUATIC CENTER CLEVELAND - The Hilltoppers of the University of Western Kentucky claimed a rare doubleheader sweep of the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen at the Delta State University Aquatics Center on Saturday. WKU claimed a 166-73 victory in the women’s meet and a 159-69 victory over the Statesmen. The Hilltoppers, a member of NCAA Division I, controlled the meet from the beginning. WKU claimed solid performances in all the major relays and victories in enough to individual events to secure the victory. Despite the setbacks, the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen turned in some outstanding individual performances. Sophomore Fernando Reis continued to perform well versus WKU with a victory in the 500-Free. Reis (4:44.19) finished the event a full four seconds ahead of second place finisher Sean Penhale. Fernando Reis was also quite impressive in the men’s 1000-Free. The sophomore finished second with 9:45.76 to finish behind Sean Penhale’s 9:37.15. Jessie Lockwood also claimed the 3-meter Diving event for the Lady Statesmen. Lockwood totaled 213.00 points to finish eight points ahead of WKU’s Erica Wilson (205.00). Freshman Becca Glass claimed second place in 1000-Free for the Lady Statesmen. Glass recorded a 10:52.68 to finish behind WKU’s Brittany Allen (10:38.44). In the women’s 200-Fly freshman Amanda Guidry fell just short of taking first place with a time of 2:10.49. WKU senior Jennifer Johnson claimed the event with a 2:10.35. Gurkon Eroksuz finished a solid third in the 200-Individual Medley for the Statesmen His time of 2:00.38 was a few seconds behind WKU’s Lewis Bryan (1:55.86). Another freshman, Roman Sereda, made an immediate impact for DSU. Sereda finished second in the 100-Free with a :47.88. October 7, 2006 LADY STATESMEN OPEN SEASON WITH STRONG PERFORMANCE VERSUS LADY PRIVATEERS CLEVELAND - In their season opening meet at the Delta State University Aquatics Center, The DSU Lady Statesmen Swimming and Diving team dropped a close meet to the University of New Orleans. The meet consisted of 13 events and at the end of the day UNO crept by with a 103 to 102 victory. DSU took the first event as Senior Casey Perkins and Junior Jennifer Artichuk helped anchor the Lady Statesmen in the 400 Medley Relay. Freshman Dawn Thomson swam a 1:59.68 to give DSU the win in the 200 Freestyle. Freshman Lacey Mixon finished with a 26.11 to take first in the 50 Free Style. Amanda Guidry placed first in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:12.10. In the 200 Backstroke, the ninth event of the day, Lady Statesmen Hannah Willis finished at the top for DSU with a 2:09.33 finishing time. The University of New Orleans finished first in six events taking home the win edging out the Lady Statesmen by one point. In the 1000 yard Free Style, sophomore Sarah Gros finished first with a time of 10:41.53. In the 200 Yard IM Courtney Hamilton swam a 2:14.96 to finish first for UNO. Erica Pasquini swam a 56.13 in the 100 Freestyle to score nine points for the Lady Privateers. Sarah Gros again finished first for UNO in the 500 Free Style scoring nine points. The Lady Privateers took first in the final two events sealing the win for the Lady Privateers. Erica Granester swam a 2:30.47 in the 200 Breaststroke and the UNO A squad finished the 400 Freestyle Relay with a 3:40.11 to win the meet for the Lady Privateers. The Delta State University Swimming and Diving team hits the pool again on October 14 as they face the University of Western Kentucky at the DSU Aquatics Center. July 31, 2006 DELTA STATE SWIMMING & DIVING EARNS PRESTIGIOUS CSCAA ACADEMIC HONOR CLEVELAND – The Delta State University Swimming and Diving Team has been named an Academic All-America Swimming Teamby the College Swim Coaches Association for the Winter/Spring semester of 2006. The Lady Statesmen completed the term with a 2.973 grade point average while the Statesmen turned in a grade point average of 2.876. “We are tremendously pleased with the success our student-athletes have been able to achieve outside the pool,” said DSU head coach Brian Hein. “We have built a tradition of excellence here over the years and I am proud that we were able to extend our streak another year.” In addition to the team recognition, four Delta State University swimmers were named College Swim Coaches Association Academic All-Americans. James “Tripp” Davis, III and Mert Saygin received the honor for the Statesmen, while Petya Petrova and Jennifer Artichuk received the award for the Lady Statesmen. “All four of these young men and women have worked to be the best in the pool and in the classroom,” said Hein. “They are all very deserving of this honor.” James “Tripp” Davis, III recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. The Madison native finished his undergraduate work with a 3.97 GPA. He is an 11 time NCAA All-American and this season Davis received the Charles S. Kerg Outstanding Senior Athlete Award at Delta State University. Davis also earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors and NSISC Academic All-Conference honors this year. Mert Saygin capped a brilliant career for the green and white with a 3.75 GPA in business. The two-time NCAA All-American from Izmir, Turkey served as Team Captain this past year. Petya Petrova , a middle distance specialist from Stara Zagagara, Bulgaria, completed her senior year as one of the most decorated Lady Statesmen of all-time. Petrova was a two-time NCAA All-American and New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference All-Conference pick. Petrova graduated in May with a 3.75 GPA in business management. Jennifer Artichuk continues to build upon her legacy here at Delta State. The sophomore from Ottawa, Ontario, is a two-time NCAA All-American and a two-time NSISC All-Conference selection. Artichuk has also been named to the NSISC Academic All-Conference team for the past two years. Each year the CSCAA sponsor the Academic All-America program. This year 417 teams representing 249 schools at all NCAA and NAIA levels met the criteria to receive the award. To qualify for the Academic All-America Team Award, the entire team must maintain at least a 2.80 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Individuals must have qualified for the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA National Championships and maintained at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY 2006 SIGNING CLASS Men May 25, 2006 BALIUS AND DAVIS GARNER CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-REGION ACCOLADES CLEVELAND - Delta State University senior swimmers Kristin Balius and Tripp Davis were named to the College Sports Information Director's of America Academic All-Region First Team on Wednesday. The two will now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-American ballot. Balius, a senior from Biloxi, graduated in May with a 3.91 GPA in biology/pre-medicine. Davis, a senior from Madison, also graduated in May with a 3.94 GPA in accounting. Balius and Davis were awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship by the National Collegiate Athletic Association earlier this month. May 9, 2006 DELTA STATE ’S BALIUS AND DAVIS CAPTURE PRESTIGIOUS NCAA POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Delta State University senior swimmers Kristin Balius and James “Tripp” Davis, III were among the 58 NCAA student-athletes awarded the prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarships of $7,500 each to 29 male student-athletes and 29 female student-athletes who participated in winter sports. Kristin Balius is a senior biology major from Biloxi. She will graduate in May with a 3.91 GPA and plans to attend medical school in the fall. One of the most decorated swimmers in Lady Statesmen history, Balius is a three-time All-NSISC honoree. She is a four-time All-NSISC Academic Team selection and a two-time NCAA Academic All-American. In May, the Biloxi native was presented the Athletic Director’s Hall of Fame Award, which is presented annually to the top student-athlete with the highest GPA. James “Tripp” Davis, III is a senior accounting major from Madison. Davis ended his DSU career as one of the most decorated swimmers in the history of the Statesmen swimming and diving program. A four-year letterman for Ronnie Mayers and Brian Hein, Davis is an 11-time NCAA All-American and a four-time All-NSISC selection. Davis is also a nine-time NSISC Champion. He has competed on four NCAA Championship squads for the Statesmen and currently ranks in the top 10 in numerous DSU events. He is also a four-time Team Workout Award winner and a three-time Scholar Athlete Award recipient. Davis is a four-time NSISC Academic All-Conference selection, while capturing NCAA Academic All-American three times. He is also the 2006 recipient of the Charles S. Kerg Award and the Athletic Director’s Hall of Fame Award. Davis was also nominated for the NCAA Man of the Year Award and CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent, and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student. Nomination information is sent to faculty athletics representatives for fall sports in September, for winter sports in late November, and for spring sports in January. Selections are made three times each academic year. The nomination must be submitted during the appropriate seasonal category for the sport to the appropriate regional committee chair. Candidates are screened by seven regional selection committees, and the award recipients are selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.
