LADY STATESMEN BLANK LADY BISON 5-0 TO ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND OF NCAA REGIONALS

PENSACOLA , FLA. –The 20th-ranked Delta State University women’s tennis team used a blistering 3-0 sweep of Harding University’s Lady Bison squad in doubles action to cruise to a 5-0 victory in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Regional on Thursday at Argonaut Courts. The South Regional is being held at the University of West Florida. DSU will now face tournament host West Florida in the second round on Friday. The winner will advance to the NCAA Championships in Houston, Texas.

STATESMEN AND LADY STATESMEN SET TO BEGIN NCAA TOURNAMENT RUN

CLEVELAND,MS- Coach Asa Atkinson and the Delta State University men’s and women’s tennis teams have capped off a successful regular season and are now preparing for first round play in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

The Statesmen will take their 10-5 record into the Valdosta, Ga., regional where they will face conference foe North Alabama (9-6) on May 8-9. This will be the first meeting of the two schools this season. All-Gulf South Conference First Team members Pascal LaPlace, and Rafael Weigand will lead the Statesmen into their first round match up with UNA. The winner will face Valdosta State, who earned a first round bye.

The Lady Statesmen (13-3) will also face a GSC opponent in opening round play, as they will travel to West Florida to take on Harding (21-5) in their first round match on May 8-9. The Lady Statesmen defeated Harding 9-0 on April 14. The winner of that match up will take on West Florida. The DSU women have not been as fortunate against the Lady Argos this season losing two tough matches. The Lady Statesmen will be led by GSC West Player of the Year Cecile Benzaki.

CECILE BENZAKI NAMED GSC WEST PLAYER OF THE YEAR; DSU RACKS UP AWARDS

BIRMINGHAM , ALA. – Coach Asa Atkinson’s Statesmen and Lady Statesmen tennis teams racked up the awards as the All-Gulf South Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams were announced on April 18.

For only the second time in history a member of the Lady Statesmen took home the GSC West Division Player of the Year award. Sophomore Cecile Benzaki, pictured above, is the first member of the squad to claim the award since Adri Van Der Wath took home the award in 1998.

The Paris, France native compiled a 13-1 record in singles play and a 10-3 record in doubles play to help guide the Lady Statesmen to the GSC West division crown with a 12-2 (7-1) record.

Not to be outdone, Katharina Nett and Milena Araujo were also on the All-GSC First Team. Araujo also claimed First Team honors in the 2007 season.

Junior Krystle Ozols was named to the Second Team. Nett finishes the regular season with a 10-3 mark, while Araujo finished with a 10-3 record as well. Ozols finishes with a 7-3 mark heading into the GSC Tournament.

The Statesmen placed two members on the All-GSC West Division First Team. Senior Rafael Weigard was named to the First Team. It marks the third time The Florianopolis, Brazil native claimed First Team honors.

Weigard has had an impressive record so far this season, going 8-2 in singles play and 8-4 in doubles play to help guide DSU to a 10-4 (3-3) record this season.

Marne , France native Pascal LaPlace was also named to the All-GSC First Team for the first time in his career. The sophomore has compiled an impressive 10-4 record in singles play and a 9-4 mark in doubles play, while competing from the first position most of the season.

Ondrej Vana of Ouachita Baptist became the first player ever to claim back to back GSC West Player of the Year honors.

Delta State and West Florida tied for the most spots on the first team with three apiece.

20 TH-RANKED LADY STATESMEN NEARLY ADVANCE TO GSC FINALS; STATESMEN FALL IN QUARTERS

MONTGOMERY, ALA.-The Delta State University men’s and women’s tennis teams concluded play at the Gulf South Conference Tennis Championships on April 19 at the O’Connor tennis center in Montgomery. Both teams finished the tournament with a 1-1 record.

The Lady Statesmen (13-3) got things started on Saturday with a 5-0 win over West Alabama before falling 5-3 to eventual runner up West Florida.

Katharina Nett, and Krystle Ozols won their doubles match 8-5, while the team of Cecile Benzaki, and Tatiana Bourchaud won 8-4. In the final match of doubles play Milena Araujo, and Priscila Duarte won 8-5 over West Alabama. Ozols, and Paulina Potapova both won singles matches in decisive fashion. Ozols defeated Brittany Williams 6-1, 6-1, while Potapova defeated Amanda Morgan 6-0, 6-0.

The Lady Statesmen had the early momentum against the Lady Argo’s after winning the opening two doubles matches, but UWF battled back winning five of the next six matches. Nett, and Ozols, and the French connection of Benzaki and Bouchaud both won the opening doubles matches for DSU.

Cecile Benzaki was the only winner in singles play for DSU defeating Paola Arevaio 6-4, 6-3.

The Statesmen fell 5-0 to eventual champion Valdosta State, who won the tournament as the third seed from the GSC East Division; however DSU won their consolation match 5-1 over Christian Brothers to improve their overall record to 11-5.

Goulven Tupin, and Julien Beckensteiner picked up wins in singles play. Tupin defeated Christian Brothers Clifton Gibbs 6-0, 6-0, while Beckensteiner defeated Antony Eddy 6-0,6-2. The doubles teams of Tupin, and Kirill Pervoun, and Beckensteiner along with Thiago Marion each won 8-0 in doubles play in the 5-1 win over CBU.

Both teams will now await word for the upcoming NCAA South Regional Tournament.

GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE HOTLY CONTESTED AFFAIR

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Five nationally ranked teams are among the eight teams set to battle for the 2008 GSC Women's Tennis Tournament Championship held this weekend, April 19-20 at Lagoon Park and O'Conner Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala. 

Three East Division squads enter the event nationally ranked in the latest ITA Division II Poll: No. 4 Valdosta State (No. 1 East seed), defending Champion No. 16 West Florida (No. 2 East) and No. 36 North Alabama (No. 3 East). No. 20 Delta State (No. 1 West) joins No. 38 Harding (No. 2 West) as ranked squads from the West Division.

Completing the eight-team field in the West is third-seeded Henderson State and the fourth seed, Arkansas Tech. West Alabama is the fourth seed filling out the bracket from the East Division.

Some of the top individual talent in the nation will also participate in the Tournament. VSU has three of the Top 50 players (No. 16 Raphaelle Durante, No. 21 Natali Gumbrecht and No. 24 Dominique Rothlander) while UWF has two, including the highest ranked GSC player (No. 7 Suzanna Cavalcante and No. 34 Renata Mattos). UNA's Pippa Reakes rounds out the GSC's ranked contingent at No. 36.

Three of the Top 25 doubles teams are also in action with the Argos' No. 3 duo of Cavalcante and Paola Arevalo along with two VSU pairs, No. 11 Karine Redon and Durante and No. 16 Gumbrecht/Rothlander.

GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS SET FOR LAGOON PARK

Birmingham, Ala.—Five of the nation's Top 32 teams headline this weekend's eight-team, Gulf South Conference Men's Tennis Championship Tournament.

The two-day tournament begins with the Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals Saturday, April 19 and ending with the Finals Sunday, April 20 at Lagoon Park and O'Conner Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.  Directions to Lagoon Park and the O'Connor Tennis Center are provided below the bracket.

Defending champion and No. 1 East seedWest Florida is among a strong field, entering the weekend ranked No. 3 in the ITA Division II Top 45. Not to be overlooked No. 2 Valdosta State (No. 3 East seed) and No. 8 Ouachita Baptist (No. 1 West seed). No. 27 Delta State (No. 2 West seed) and No. 32 North Alabama (No. 2 East seed) rounds out the nationally ranked contingent.

The rest of the field includes No. 3 West seed Harding and the No. 4 East seed West Alabama and No. 4 West seed Christian Brothers.

Seven nationally-ranked singles players five of the top doubles teams will also take the courts. VSU has three ranked singles with No. 4 Florian Halb, No. 10 Joerg Ekkenga and No. 14 Leos Jelinek. UWF and OBU follow with two each, No. 17 Eduardo Cavasotti and No. 27 Nicolas Barrientos from the Argos and No. 9 Ondra Vana and No. 26Jan Plewinski.

The Nation's top ranked doubles squad, the Blazers' Ekkenga and Jelinek, join four other Top 25 pairs: No. 10 Vana/Jakub Smid (OBU), No. 13 Cavasotti/Luis Arboleda (UWF), No. 17 Carlos Cardenas/Zac Bereznicki (UNA) and No. 18 Barrientos/Patrick Batman (UWF).

LADY STATESMEN CLAIM GULF SOUTH WEST CROWN WITH 9-0 WIN AT HARDING; STATESMEN TOP BISON 8-1

SEARCY, ARK. – With a lot of effort and determination, coach Asa Atkinson and the Delta State Lady Statesmen Tennis team (11-2, 4-1 GSC) claimed the Gulf South Conference West Division title with a 9-0 blanking of the Lady Bison of Harding University (20-4, 5-1 GSC) Monday at Harding Courts. The victory guarantees the Lady Statesmen the top seed out of the West in the upcoming GSC Tournament. The Statesmen were also victorious on Monday with an 8-1 victory over the Bison.

“We played with a singular focus today. Our ladies knew what was at stake and really went out and claimed the day. The men really fed off their enthusiasm and turned up the intensity for a key win,” said Atkinson, DSU head coach.

Katharina Nett got the ball rolling for the Lady Statesmen with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Harding’s Alicia Williams in No. 1 singles. Cecile Benzaki followed suit with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Karina Gomes in No. 2 singles. DSU would close out the remaining singles matches with wins by Milena Araujo, Krystle Ozols, Tatiana Bouchaud, and Paulina Potapova.

The Lady Statesmen also dominated doubles play with victories in all three matches.

On the men’s side, Pascal LaPlace’s straight sets win over Harding’s Olzhas Taniyev 6-3, 6-3 pushed the Statesmen ahead in the match. In a thrilling three set match, DSU’s Thiago Marion edged Harding’s Richard Rios 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to seal the win for DSU.

Pascal LaPlace and Rafael Weigand teamed up for the win in No. 1 doubles, while Kirill Pervoon and Goulven Tupin claimed the No. 2 doubles match as well.

The Lady Statesmen close out the regular season Tuesday at Southern Arkansas, while the Statesmen will begin preparations for the upcoming GSC Tournament. Both teams will begin competition in the GSC Tournament on Saturday, April 19.

STATESMEN AND LADY STATESMEN SWEEP WEEKEND COMPETITION

CLEVELAND- After dropping two straight matches to top-10 opponents, West Florida (3) and Ouachita Baptist (8), the Statesmen tennis team looked to regain some form last weekend, sweeping Christian Bothers University 9-0 and Alcorn State University 7-0. The wins put the Statesmen at 9-4 on the year.

The Lady Statesmen have won four of their last five, and are rolling with confidence into the Gulf South Conference Tournament after sweeping Christian Brothers 9-0 over the weekend.

The men and women travel to Searcy, Arkansas Monday to take on Harding University, it will close out the season for the men. The women will travel to Magnolia, Arkansas and take on Southern Arkansas University before heading to the Gulf South Conference Tournament this weekend.

STATESMEN AND LADY STATESMEN RANKED IN LATEST NCAA SOUTH REGION RANKINGS

CLEVELAND - With the 2008 season in full swing, the Delta State University men's and women's tennis teams are right in the thick of the South Region race according to the latest NCAA rankings released Wednesday.

The Lady Statesmen are currently third in the NCAA South Region women's poll, while the Statesmen are fifth in the men's rankings.

Both teams will be in action Saturday, April 5 versus nationally ranked BYU-Hawaii in Pensacola, Fla. DSU will also face national power West Florida on Sunday, April 6.

LADY STATESMEN AND STATESMEN CONTINUE SOLID START TO 2008 SEASON

CLEVELAND - The Delta State University men’s and women’s tennis teams have continued their solid play as Gulf South Conference play has started to heat up. The two teams combined to go 4-1 during the week of March 22-March 29.

Both the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen defeated Alcorn State on March 22. The Statesmen came from behind after going 0-2 to start the doubles matches, but bounced back to win 7 of their next eight matches against the Braves. Pascal Laplace, Kirill Pervoon, Rafael Weigand, Goulven Tupin, and Erik Jahreskog all picked up wins in singles play. The team of Thiago Mavion and Julien Beckensteiner picked up DSU’S only doubles win with an 8-1 victory.

In ladies play the Lady Statesmen defeated ASU by a score of 7-2 to push their season record to 7-1. DSU swept all doubles matches while taking 4-of-6 in singles play. Cecile Benzaki, Milena Araujo, Krystle Ozols, and Paulina Potapova all won singles matches for the Lady Statesmen.

Both teams also emerged with a sweep against the LeMoyne Owen Magicians on March 26.

Each team cruised to 9-0 victories in their respective matches. The Statesmen dropped only two games in the nine matches. On the women’s side the Lady Statesmen also dominated losing only one game in their nine matches.

The last time out for the Statesmen saw conference rival and #8 ranked Ouachita Baptist keep up their steady play defeating the Statesmen easily, 8-1. Pascal Laplace was the lone bright spot for the Statesmen winning his number one singles match by a score of 6-3, 6-1.

The Lady Statesmen return to action on April 1 as they will take on OBU, while the Statesmen return to the court on April 5 when they will take on BYU-Hawaii.

STATESMEN DROP FIRST TWO MATCHES OF 2008

ARKADELPHIA,AR.- Coach Asa Atkinson and the Statesmen tennis team dropped their first two matches of the young season, falling 5-4 to Southwest Baptist, and 5-0 to Ouachita Baptist.

DSU went 2-1 in doubles play, but fell 4-2 in singles action. Pascal LaPlace, and Rafael Weigand won their doubles contest by a score of 8-4. Thiago Mavion and Julian Beckensteiner also won their doubles contest 8-6 to propel the Statesmen to 2-1 doubles victory.

Weigand, and Beckensteiner were the lone bright spots in singles play, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, and 6-2, 6-1 respectively.

The Statesmen found it hard to get going against a powerful OBU team losing in five matches, and retiring in three.

Delta State’s David Voravongsa tabbed All-American by Intercollegiate Tennis Association

CLEVELANDDelta State University senior tennis player David Voravongsa has been named an All-American by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, as released on Wednesday.  This marks the second All-American honor for Voravongsa in his career and the first for the Statesmen tennis program this year.

Voravongsa, a 6-foot-1 senior from Cannes, France, finished the year ranked fifteenth in singles in the Fila/NCAA Division II Top 30 rankings after guiding Delta State to the NCAA South Region final.  The speedy right-hander finished the year 6-5 in singles and 6-9 in doubles after playing number one singles and doubles all year for the Statesmen.

Voravongsa capped his three-year career as one of the most decorated Statesmen in history.  He is the program's first two-time All-American and the senior was selected to the All-Gulf South Conference First Team for a third consecutive season this year.

Lady Blazers blank lady Statesmen 5-0 to end NCAA Regional run for DSU

VALDOSTA , Ga. - Valdosta State advanced to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship as the Lady Blazers defeated Delta State 5-0 Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Lady Blazers improved to 17-5 on the season while Delta State completed its season with a 15-5 mark.

Valdosta State claimed all three doubles points to open the match. Raphaelle Durante and Karine Redon opened with an 8-1 win over Nancy Lelorrain and Milena Araujo at No. 2 before Natalie Gumbrecht and Clair McKinnon won 8-2 overTatiana Bouchard and Lisa Ortola at No. 3.VSU's Dominique Rothlander and Anne Corten closed out doubles play with an 8-3 victory Paula Uchida and Agnes Koch at No. 1.

In singles action, Corten defeated Koch 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 while Redon closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ortola at No. 5.

Valdosta State will play the winner of the Central Region match between Northeastern State and East Central on Wednesday, May 9 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. in the next round of the NCAA Tournament.

No. 1 West Florida Moves Another Step Closer to National Title; Argonauts defeat second-seeded Statesmen in Regional Finals

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Top-Ranked West Florida (24-3) continued their march towards another national title with a 5-1 victory over Delta State (14-8), Friday afternoon at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex located of the UWF Campus.

The Argonauts took an early lead by winning two out of three doubles matches from the Statesmen. West Florida’s team of Dante Bottini (Buenos Aries, Argentina) and Nicholas Barrientos (Cali, Columbia) ran into little trouble during their 8-4 victory over the Statesmen’s David Voravongsa, and Argo teammates Diego Zorzi (Buenos Aries, Argentina) and Luis Arboleda (Medellin, Columbia) follow suit winning their match 8-6 giving West Florida the 2-0 lead. The Statesmen struck back with a win by their third spot pair consisting of Rafael Weigand and Mathieu Provost.

In singles action West Florida blanked Delta State winning three matches in straight set to claim the victory. Playing out of the first spot for the Argonauts Zorzi claim a two-set, 6-3, 6-3, win over Voravongsa. Argonauts teammate Bottini also made quick work of his second spot match also claiming a two-set, 6-2, 6-2, victory against Pascal LaPlace, who he also beat in double action.  Luis Bernadi (Campinas, Brazil) finished the match with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph playing out of the sixth spot.

West Florida will return to action during the NCAA Division II Men's National Championship, beginning on Wednesday, May 9 in Orlando, Fla.

VALDOSTA STATE, DELTA STATE ADVANCE AT WOMEN’S SOUTH REGION: Lady Blazers, Lady Statesmen to meet Friday in NCAA Division II Tournament’s second round

VALDOSTA, Ga. Valdosta State and Delta State used dominating victories to advance to the second round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis South Region Thursday afternoon.

In the first match of the day, Delta State claimed a 5-1 victory over Henderson State. The Lady Statesmen (15-4) claimed two of the three doubles points, with Paula Uchida and Agnes Koch defeating Melissa West and Shelley Westerfield 8-6 at No. 1 and Lisa Ortola and Claire Dean winning 8-6 over Tara Meier and Megan Harness 8-6 at No. 3. For Henderson State (13-9), Meredith Massey and Rebecca Staton claimed an 8-3 win over DSU’s Nancy Lelorrain and Milena Araujo at No. 2.

DSU swept the three singles matches that were completed as Lelorrain opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win over HSU’s Iustina Gasca-Silva at No. 2 while Araujo downed Meier 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 and Ortola defeated Staton 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.

Valdosta State (16-5) rolled to a 5-0 victory over Clark Atlanta (14-6) in the second match of the day. The Blazers opened the match up 2-0 as the Lady Panthers were forced to default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles as only five players were available to compete in the match.

VSU dropped just one game in the remaining two doubles matches as Dominique Rothlander and Anne Corten defeated Simone Greene and Tara Turner 8-1 at No. 1 while Raphaelle Durante and Karine Redon claimed an 8-0 win over Shaundrea Brooks and Tyronda Starks at No. 2.
Corten closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Starks at No. 3 singles.

Delta State and Valdosta State will meet Friday, May 4 at Noon to determine which team will advance to the Round of 16 in the Division II Team Championship, being held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. May 9-12.

Delta State Sweeps GSC Foe North Alabama; Statesmen Advance to face Argonauts

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Second-seed Delta State (14-7) swept Gulf South Conference foe North Alabama (9-11) in their first round match up during the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament Thursday afternoon at Ralph “Skeeter” Carson complex located on the West Florida campus. The Statesmen won all three doubles matches and quickly won two singles matches to advance to the second round of the tournament.

Delta State took a 3-0 lead by sweeping the double action. The Statesmen's top team of David Voravongsa and Thomas Pasquet defeated the Lions top of pair consisting of Bruno Zuleta and Christoffer Sodemann, 8-5. Delta State’s team of Rafael Weigand and Mathieu Provost completed the sweep with a 8-4 victory over North Alabama’s duo of Jorge Yunes and Adam Loudermilk.

Playing in the second position for Delta State Pascal LaPlace struck the first blow in singles action defeating North Alabama’s Zuleta in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. The Statesmen’s Provost finished the match with a two set, 6-0, 6-2, triumph over the Lions Sodemann.    

Second-seeded Delta State advances to take on top-ranked West Florida (23-3) in the second round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament with the winner advancing to the round of 16, which takes place in Orlando, Fla.

Statesmen and Lady Statesmen set for NCAA Regionals

CLEVELAND - The Delta State men’s and women’s tennis teams will begin competition in the NCAA tournament on Friday, May 4. The Lady Statesmen travel to Valdosta State, while the men will be in Pensacola, Fla. at the University of West Florida.
           
The men will face GSC foe No. 3 seed North Alabama in the West Florida regional. The Statesmen have beaten the Lions twice this season, a 5-1 win in the regular season and a 5-3 victory in the quarter-finals of the GSC tournament.
           
The women earned a No. 2 seed in the Valdosta regional and will face Henderson State. Delta State won the regular season meeting 8-1.
           
The men enter the competition with an overall record of 13-7 while the women have posted a 15-3 mark this season. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen extend their consecutive NCAA streak with their 17th appearance overall.

15th-ranked Statesmen and 24th-ranked Lady Statesmen fall at GSC Championsips; DSU set for NCAA Regional bid

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Gulf South Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Championships began Saturday with mixed results for the 15th-ranked Statesmen and 24th-ranked Lady Statesmen.

In the women's draw, the Lady Statesmen began the day with a 5-0 victory over the fourth-seeded Lady Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville. Delta State claimed all three doubles matches led by Paula Uchida and Agnes Koch, who claimed an 8-4 win over UAH's Mireria Fernandez and Yngrid Alviz.

In single's action, Nancy Lelorrain defeated Stacy Wetmore 6-0, 6-1; while Lisa Ortola handed Candice Bush a straight set loss 6-1 and 6-1.

The victory placed DSU in the semifinals versus top-ranked West Florida. The Lady Argonauts wasted little time sending the Lady Statesmen back to Cleveland 5-0.

On the men's side, the Statesmen also tasted success in the first match of the day, a 5-3 win over third seeded North Alabama.

David Voravongsa, the 15th-ranked singles player in the nation, roared back from a 4-6 first set deficit to defeat UNA's Everton Silva 4-6, 6-1, and 6-4.

Thomas Pasquet, Matthew Provoust and Rafael Weigand all claimed single's victories as well for the Statesmen.

Weigand and Provoust teamed for DSU's only doubles victory on the day. The tandem downed UNA's Jorge Yunes and Roberto Mateos de le Mora 8-6.

The victory placed the Statesmen in the semifinals versus top-ranked West Florida. The Argonauts polished off the Statesmen 5-0.

Both the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen are set for NCAA Regional bids. Locations, times and dates will be released on Monday.

Delta State’s Paula Uchida headlines All-Gulf South Conference Tennis teams; DSU places six on squad

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference honored its top players from the East and West Divisions on Friday, as the league announced the All-GSC First and Second Teams.  Delta State University senior tennis player Paula Uchida headlined the All-Gulf South Conference West Division Team for a fourth consecutive season, as the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen placed a total of six players on the GSC’s postseason squads. 

The 24th-ranked Lady Statesmen were represented on the All-GSC West Division First Team by Uchida, junior Agnes Koch and sophomore Milena Araujo.  Lisa Ortola garnered Second Team honors.  For the 15th-ranked Statesmen, a trio return to the All-GSC First Team led by seniors David Voravongsa and Thomas Pasquet and junior Rafael Weigard.   

For Paula Uchida, Friday’s announcement held special significance.  The 5-foot-1 senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil became just the fourteenth player in GSC history to be named to the All-GSC First Team four years in a row.  The speedy right-hander has played No. 1 and No. 2 singles for the Lady Statesmen this season, while amassing as mark of 10-6 overall.  She is also an accomplished doubles player, teaming with Agnes Koch for an 11-4 doubles record. 

Koch and Araujo have also posted stellar numbers for the GSC West Division champs.  Koch, a 5-foot-7 junior from Pau France, has recorded a 13-3 mark on the year, while Araujo has been equally impressive at 13-2.  Araujo, a 5-foot-3 sophomore from Sau Paulo, Brazil, was named to the All-GSC Second Team last season as a freshman.  The duo has a combined 22-8 mark in varied doubles tandems.

Ortola has also turned in a solid senior campaign for coach Atkinson’s squad.  The Issiore, France native has an 8-2 singles record, while finishing the regular season with an 8-6 doubles record.

On the men’s side, David Voravongsa leads the way for the Statesmen.  The 6-foot senior from Cannes, France has battled injury and the opposition’s top player all year long to finish the regular season with a 5-3 mark in singles play.  He is currently ranked No. 15 in the nation in singles.  Voravongsa has also proved to be solid doubles player with an 8-6 record.

Thomas Pasquet and Rafael Weigard are not to be overlooked for DSU.  Pasquet, a 5-foot-9 senior from Aix en Provence, France, has recorded an 8-5 mark in singles play and a 10-6 record in doubles matches.  Weigard, a 6-foot junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has also been a clutch performer for Atkinson’s club.  The speedy right-hander has won 7-of-11 singles matches and 10-of-15 doubles matches.

All three Statesmen honored were 2006 All-GSC First Team selections.  For Voravongsa and Pasquet, Friday’s announcement marked the third consecutive year they have been named to the All-GSC West Division First Team.

It also marks the third straight year that coach Asa Atkinson’s teams have placed at least five on the All-GSC teams.

The six All-GSC performers will lead their respective teams into this weekend’s Gulf South Conference Tennis Championships hosted by Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark.  The 24th-ranked Lady Statesmen enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed from the West, while the 15th-ranked Statesmen will be the tournaments No. 2 seed from the West.

Lady Statesmen and Statesmen sweep Alcorn State

CLEVELAND - After solidifying their spots in the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament, the Delta State University men’s and women’s tennis teams continued riding the momentum defeating in-state opposition Alcorn State University Friday at University Courts.
           
The Statesmen took two-of-three in doubles action after Thomas Pasquet and David Varavongza lost 9-7 to Shashank Kulkarni and Abhaya Prakash. The Statesmen earned their sixth straight victory despite knotting up at 3-3 in singles action.
           
The Lady Statesmen made quick work of the Lady Braves winning comfortably 7-2 to earn their third straight. Delta State swept the doubles action before dropping two in the singles sets.
           
Both teams will travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. for the Gulf South Conference tournament April 20-21. The first serve is yet to be announced.

Lady Statesmen claim GSC West crown with 6-3 win over Lady Bisons

CLEVELAND - On Thursday, the Delta State University Lady Statesmen tennis team faced the Lady Bison of Harding University in a key conference match up. The Lady Statesmen defeated HU 6-3. The win gives the Lady Statesmen the number one seed in the west headed into this years Gulf South Conference Tournament.

In singles play, Agnes Koch defeated Milena Chisaca in singles three 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Milena Araujo took singles four defeating Lola Pardo 6-4, 6-3. Singles five saw Lisa Ortolo defeat Katherine Golik 7-5, 6-4. Tatiana Bourchaud closed out singles play winning singles six, defeating Lianea Jordan 6-1, 7-5.

In Doubles Action, Lelorrian and Araujo took doubles two defeating Gomez and Pardo 8-6. Ortolo and Bourchaud defeated Golik and Jordan 8-6.

Statesmen wrap up conference play with 8-1 win over Bisons

CLEVELAND - On Thursday, the Statesmen tennis team faced the Bisons of Harding University in a key conference match up. The Statesmen defeated Harding University 8-1. With the win the Statesmen clinch the number two seed in the West Division heading into this year's Gulf South Conference Tournament.

In singles action, the Statesmen won five of six matches. Singles one saw 15th ranked David Voravongsa defeat Richard Rios 6-1, 6-1. In singles two Pascal LaPlace defeated Marco Ruiz 6-2, 6-1. Thomas Pasquet took singles three defeating Joaquin Mejia 7-5, 6-3. Mathiew Prouvost defeated Ryan Roberts in singles four 6-0, 6-4. Julien Beckensteiner closed out singles play with a win in singles six defeating Ethan Bryant 7-6, 6-2.

In doubles play, Pasquet and Voravongsa defeated Rios and Ruiz 8-5 in doubles one. Doubles two had Prouvost and Weigard defeat Mejia and Roberts 8-3. Wrapping up in doubles three DSU’s Pervoun and LaPlace defeated Bryant and Mendoza 8-4.

CLEVELAND -The Lady Statesmen tennis squad faced the Lady Buccaneers of Christian Brothers University on Wednesday with Delta State sweeping the match 9-0 at University Courts.

In doubles play, Paula Uchida and Tatiana Bouchaud won doubles one 8-1. Lisa Ortola and Claire Dean took control winning 8-1 in doubles two. Doubles three was forfeited by CBU giving the win to Nancy Lelorrian and Milena Araujo.
           
In singles action, DSU swept all matches. DSU’s Lelorrian took the win in singles one 6-1, 6-0. Paula Uchida swept singles two 6-0, 6-0. Singles three saw Ortola win 6-0, 6-0 while Bouchaud took singles four 6-0, 6-0. In singles five Claire Dean took the win 6-0, 6-0. Agnes Koch won singles six by forfeit.
           
The Lady Statesmen are back in action April 12 as they face the Bison of Harding University.

Statesmen slam Buccaneers 9-0

CLEVELAND - The Delta State University Statesmen tennis team faced the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers University on Wednesday at University and pulled out an 8-0 win.
           
In doubles action, the Statesmen swept all matches. In doubles one Thomas Pasquet and Julien Beckensteiner won 8-1. Rafael Weigand and Mathiew Prouvost took doubles two 8-0, and in doubles three Kirill Pervoon and Daniel Kartsev won 8-1.
           
In singles play, the Statesmen again won all matches. The first singles match of the day was not played. Singles two had Prvoust winning 6-1, 6-1. Singles three saw Weigand get the win 6-1, 6-0. Pervoon took singles four 6-0, 6-1 while Beckensteiner received the win 6-0, 6-0 in singles five. In singles six Kartsev took the match 6-0, 6-0.
           
The Statesmen are back in action on April 12 as they face the Bison of Harding University. All matches will be played in Cleveland.

Statesmen and Lady Statesmen tennis teams in nation's Top 25 rankings

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Delta State University men’s and women’s tennis teams remained in the nation’s top 25 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association/College Tennis Online Rankings released Tuesday.
               
The Lady Statesmen, undefeated in Gulf South Conference action at 6-0 and 11-3 overall, have climbed to No. 23 in the nation. Led by junior Agnes Koch, with an 11-3 record in both singles and doubles play, the Lady Statesmen hope to continue their momentum heading into the GSC championships later this month.
               
The Statesmen, who have been in the Top 25 all season, have climbed to No. 17 in the country despite an overall record of 9-6 and a 3-3 mark in GSC play. Junior Julien Beckensteiner has set the pace for this team, leading in wins with an 8-2 record in singles and an undefeated mark at 5-0 in doubles competition.
               
Both the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen are in conference action this week against Christian Brothers University. The match is set for 1 p.m. at University Courts.

Lady Statesmen split pair of matches at White Sands Classic

PENSACOLA, Fla. - On Friday, Coach Asa Atkinson and the Delta State University Lady Statesmen tennis team traveled to Pensacola, Fla. as they competed in the White Sands Classic.

On Friday the Lady Statesmen faced the Lady Tigers of West Alabama. DSU won the outing by a score of 8-1.
In Doubles play, the Lady Statesmen swept all three matches. In doubles one Paula Uchida and Agnes Koch defeated UWA’s Amy Cole and Adanys Clerch 8-2. Doubles two saw Milena Araujo and Nancy Lellorian sweep Rama Siby and and Amy Frazier 8-0. In the final doubles match Lisa Ortola and Tatiana Bouchaud defeated Lady Tigers Rachel Hardaway and Amanda Morgan 8-1.

Singles play was controlled by DSU as well. The Lady Statesmen won five of six matches . In singles two Lellorian defeated Cole 6-0, 6-2. Singles three saw Agnes Koch defeat Frazier 6-0, 6-2. Araujo took singles four 6-0, 6-0 and Claire dean won singles five 6-1, 6-2. Bouchaud closed out the day for DSU winning singles six 7-6, 6-1.

On Saturday, the Lady Statesmen faced Georgia College and State University on day two of the White Sands Classic. 11th ranked GCSU won the outing 5-0.

On the final day of the White Sands Classic, the Lady Statesmen were scheduled to face St. Edwards University. The meeting was rained out.

Statesmen sweep two matches at White Sands Classic

Doubles action saw the Statesmen take all three matches. In doubles one, David Voravongsa and Thomas Pasquet won 8-3. Doubles two saw Kirill Pervoon and Pascal LaPlace win 8-3. Mathiew Provost and Rafael Weigand closed out doubles play winning doubles three 8-4.
           
In singles action, Thomas Pasquet won singles two 6-2, 6-0 and Prouvost took singles three 6-2, 6-2.
           
On Saturday, the Statesmen faced Georgia College and State University in the second round of the WSC. DSU won the outing 5-1.
           
DSU swept doubles play as Voravongsa and Pasquet won doubles one 8-4. Doubles two saw Pervoon and LaPlace win 8-2. Weigand and Prouvost took doubles three 8-2.   

In singles action, the Statesmen won two matches. Singles four had Provoust winning in straight sets 6-0, 7-5. Julien Beckensteiner won singles six 6-3, 6-0.

On day three of the White Sands Classic DSU’s meeting with Barry University was cancelled due to rain.

Lady Statesmen tennis continues roll over Spring Break

CLEVELAND - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen tennis team continued their winning ways heading into March, winning three straight matches before dropping their first of the season to 18th ranked Northeastern State.

The Lady Statesmen traveled to interstate rival Alcorn State and cam home with a comfortable victory 5-2. Junior Agnes Koch went the distance in her first match against Stefania Guzman, winning 6-1, 4-6, 10-8. Milena Araujo and Lisa Ortolo all won in straight sets. The Lady Statesmen took the lead into the doubles math-up taking 2-of-3 on the day. Paula Uchida and Agnes Koch combined for an 8-4 win over Sarah Peters and Stefania Guzman. Alcorn forfeited the last match after tying the series in the second game.

The next opponent would be Henderson State University who have not been consistent all season, as Delta State won easily 8-1. The Lady Statesmen’s only loss on the day was credited to Nancy Lelorrain losing in straight sets to Meredith Massey 6-0, 6-4. Paula Uchida, Agnes Koch, Milena Araujo, Lisa Ortolo and Tatiana  Bourchaud all won easily in straight sets.

Arkansas Tech would become the ninth straight victim for the Lady Statesmen, as Delta State would only drop won match to win easily 8-1. Claire Dean would drop her first singles match on the season with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Renee Malcuit to disrupt the sweep.

Dreams of a perfect season quickly came to a halt for the Lady Statesmen as unbeaten and 18th ranked Northeastern State would hand Delta State their first loss, 0-9 their first since the Gulf South Conference tournament last season.
Agnes Koch, who was previously undefeated in singles competition, had the only chance against Romana Jovanovicova going the distance and losing 4-6, 6-2, 1-0.

The Lady Statesmen will host their first match on the season against Le Moyne-Owen College March 21 at University Courts. The first serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Lady Statesmen crush CBU/LeMoyne Owen to stay unbeaten

MEMPHIS, TENN. - On Thursday the Lady Statesmen Tennis team traveled to Memphis to play the Lady Buccaneers of Christian Brothers University. Delta State won the outing 9-0 winning all matches.
           
In doubles play, Paula Uchida and Agnes Koch started the day by winning doubles one 8-0. Doubles two saw Milena Araujo and Tatiana Bouchaud defeated Lady Bucs Koerber and Jerden 8-0. Delta State closed out doubles competition with Claire Dean and Nancy Lelorrian winning doubles three 8-0.
           
Singles play belonged to the green and white as well as DSU won all six matches. Paula Uchida won singles one 6-0, 6-0 beating CBU’s Laura Velasco. Nancy Lelorrian defeated Susie Mohan to take singles two 6-0, 6-2. Agnes Koch Received the win for DSU in singles three winning 6-0, 6-0. Araujo won singles four 6-0, 6-0, while Bouchaud took singles five 6-0, 6-0. Claire Dean finished the day winning singles six 6-0, 6-2.
             
Friday the Lady Statesmen Faced the Lady Magicians of Le Moyne Owen University. The Lady Statesmen won the outing 9-0 winning all matches.
           
In doubles play Uchida and Koch won doubles one 8-0. Lelorrian and dean closed out Doubles play with a win in doubles three.
           
Singles belonged to DSU as well as the Lady Statesmen swept Le Moyne Owen. Uchida started things off defeating Ariel Fox 6-0, 6-0. Singles four saw DSU’s Araujo defeat Chanell Davis 6-0, 6-0. Claire Dean finished the day with a win in singles six 6-0, 6-0 defeating Sharletha Farmer to finish the sweep.

Statesmen continue winning ways

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - On Thursday, the Statesmen tennis team traveled to Memphis to face conference rival Christian Brothers University. DSU won the outing 9-0. In doubles play Statesmen Julien Beckensteiner and Pascal LaPlace took doubles one 8-2. Thomas Pasquet and Mathiew Provost swept doubles two 8-0.
           
In singles play Pascal LaPlace started things out winning singles one 6-2, 6-1. Julien Becken Steiner took singles five 6-1, 6-0 defeating Justin Byrd while Daniel Kartsev took singles six 6-0, 6-0.
           
On Friday The Statesmen played the Le Moyne Owen Magicians, defeating them 9-0. The Statesmen won all matches on the day.
           
In doubles play, Pasquet and Provoust won doubles two 8-6 and Kirill Pervoon and Daniel Kartsev followed with a win in doubles three.

            In singles play Pascal LaPlace won Singles one 6-2, 6-1. Julien Beckensteiner took the win in singles five 6-0, 6-0. Daniel Kartsev finished the day with a win in singles

Lady Statesmen slam Lady Tigers 7-2

ARKADELPHIA, ARK. - On Friday, the Lady Statesmen tennis squad traveled to Arkadelphia as they faced the Lady Tigers of Ouachita Baptist University. The Lady Statesmen took the win 7-2.
            In doubles play, the Lady Statesmen took two of three matches. In doubles one Paula Uchida and Agnes Koch defeated Catalina Cruz and Natalia Drada 8-1. Doubles three saw Nancy Lelorrian and Lisa Ortola defeat OBU’s Gatzki and Potts 8-0.
            In singles play, DSU won five of six matches. Nancy Lelorrian won singles two 6-3, 6-4 while Agnes Koch won 6-4, 6-1 in singles three. Singles four was taken by Milena Araujo 7-6, 6-3. In singles five Tatiana Bouchad won 6-4, 6-2. Lisa Ortolla wrapped things up for DSU winning singles six 6-4, 6-2.   

Statesmen upend #19 Midwestern State; Lady Statesmen edge Lady Indians 5-3

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen tennis teams continued their 2007 campaign this weekend with the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen traveling to Arkadelphia to face the Indians on Saturday. The Statesmen won the outing by a score of 5-3.
           
In doubles action Delta State won two of three matches. Thomas Pasquet and Mathiew Provoust defeated Van Swelm and Villarraul 8-5 in doubles 2. The Statesmen also took doubles three as Kerill Pervoon and Rafael Weigand defeated MSU’s McKinney and Stegler 8-4.
           
In singles play DSU won three of six matches with singles five declared unfinished. In singles one Statesman David Voravongsa won 6-4, 6-4 over Brett Smerson. Thomas Pasquet took singles three defeating Zach Dillard 6-4, 6-1. Singles four saw DSU’s Provoust Defeat Charles Van Swelm 6-1, 6-2.
           
The Lady Statesmen defeated the Lady Indians 5-3 winning one of three in doubles and four of six in singles.
           
In doubles play DSU’s  Paula Uchida and Agnes Koch won doubles one 8-4 claiming the Lady Statesmen’s only win in Doubles play on the day.
           
Singles play belonged to the green and white as the Lady Statesmen won four of six matches with the sixth match unfinished. In singles one DSU’s Uchida won in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. Nancy Lelorrian won singles two 6-2, 6-3. Singles three and four were also taken by the Lady Statesmen as Agnes Koch won singles three 6-4, 6-4. Milena Lelorrian took singles four 6-4, 6-1.
           
The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen return to the court on February 22nd as they face Lemoyne Owen University in Memphis.

STATESMEN AND LADY STATESMEN OPEN 2007 SEASON WITH A BANG

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Coach Asa Atkinson and the Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen tennis squads opened their season this past weekend with matches on Friday and Saturday. The Statesmen traveled Friday to Arkadelphia, Ark., to face the Tigers of Ouachita Baptist University. The Statesmen struggled to find their rhythm as they fell to the Tigers 7-2.

Pascal LaPlace gave the Statesmen their first win of the day as he defeated OBU’s Ty Vanmyer 6-4, 6-3. Thomas Pasquet won singles three for the Statesmen defeating Tiger Jakub Smid 6-2, 6-4.
           
The Lady Statesmen opened the season Friday in Magnolia, Ark. facing the Lady Muleriders of Southern Arkansas University. The meeting was controlled by DSU as the Lady Statesmen defeated SAU 6-3.

In doubles play DSU claimed the victory in doubles two as Milena Araujo and Tatiana Bruchaud defeated Nelly Tualla and Caitlin Korensek 8-4. Delta State also took doubles three as Agnes Koch and Claire Dean defeated Aneeka Bhalla and Megan Phinny 8-6.

In singles action, the Lady Statesmen won four of six matches with Paula Uchida winning singles one 6-2, 6-2. Lady Statesman Nancy Lelorrain grabbed singles two winning 6-1, 6-2. Araujo defeated Bhaula in singles three 6-1, 6-2.
           
On Saturday, both the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen traveled to Arkadelphia Ark., facing Southwest Baptist University. In doubles action, the Statesmen won two of three matches. Pervoon and Weigand won doubles two by a score of 8-6. Doubles three also belonged to the Statesmen as LaPlace and Beckensteiner won 8-6.
           
In singles play the Statesmen won three of six matches with Provost winning singles three 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. Singles five belonged to the Statesmen and Weigand 6-2, 6-1. The Statesmen closed out the day with a win in singles six by Julien Beckensteiner 6-1, 6-0 to seal the win 5-4.
           
The Lady Statesmen improved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-1 victory at SWB. Uchida and Koch took doubles one 8-6 while Araujo and Bruchaud took doubles three 8-1. In singles play The Lady Statesmen won singles two behind the play of Lelorrian 6-3, 6-4. Singles three saw Araujo win for DSU 6-3, 6-4. Koch finished the day for DSU winning singles four 6-1, 7-5.
           
The Lady Statesmen return to action on Feb. 16 at OBU. Both teams will face Midwestern State on Feb. 17 in Arkadelphia.
