Eli Whiteside

Eli Whiteside was the starting catcher for the Statesmen and head coach Mike Kinnison from 1999-2001. Whiteside was a two-time All-Gulf South Conference selection (2000, 2001) and a 2001 American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region and All-American.   He was named to the 2001 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship and NCAA South Central Region All-Tournament teams and was voted DSU's N.L. Cassibry MVP (2001). Whiteside finished his DSU career with a .387 batting average (12th) and 152 RBIs (seventh) and ranks sixth in the season record book with 75 RBIs in 2001.    The Statesmen won three GSC West Division titles, the 2000 GSC Tournament and 2001 NCAA South Central Region titles, finishing tied for third in 2001.
 
Whiteside was drafted in the fourth round by the Baltimore Orioles following his junior year in 2001 and is currently with the Chicago Cubs organization.  He played nine games with the Orioles in 2005 before being traded to San Francisco where he was a part of two World Series Championship teams from 2009-12.
