Cooper and Walker named to DakTronics All-South Region First Team

Bug Cooper was one of two Lady Statesmen named to the DakTronics All-South Region First Team

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Delta State Lady Statesmen placed two players – junior point guard Bug Cooper and sophomore post Veronica Walker – on the 2009-2010 DakTronics Women's Basketball All-South Region First Team that was announced Wednesday.

The honors were the latest in a string of postseason awards for Cooper and Walker, both former prep teammates at Gentry High School in Indianola, Miss. Both players earned All-Gulf South Conference Tournament honors last week.

Walker, the GSC West Division Player of the Year, leads both her team and the conference in scoring and rebounding, averaging 20.8 and 9.8 boards per contest. At the end of the regular season, Walker led the NCAA in field goal percentage, draining 66.9 percent of her shots.

Walker was also the GSC's most prolific shot-blocker. Through 28 games this season, Walker has blocked 70 shots, good for an average of 2.5 per game.

Cooper, meanwhile, leads the nation with 8.9 assists per game. She has also averaged 10.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest. Earlier this season, Cooper set the all-time GSC record for assists, and has dished out 667 for her career.

The Gulf South Conference was well represented on the DakTronics First Team, as Arkansas Tech's Jenny Vining was also honored. Mariesa Green (Barry) and Chelsea Johnson (Florida Southern) rounded out the First Team. Green, a senior forward from Indianapolis, was named the player of the year.

The Lady Statesmen open NCAA South Region Tournament play Friday when they meet Lynn University at 1:30 p.m. at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville, Ark.
