No. 12 Lady Statesmen fall 65-63 to Knights

Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Fighting Knights of Lynn University (2-0) claimed a 65-63 victory over the No. 12-ranked Lady Statesmen (1-1) of Delta State University in game two of the University of West Florida Classic at the UWF Fieldhouse. 

After trailing 33-27 at the half, the Lady Statesmen made a run in the second period, cutting the Lynn lead to five with 2:07 to play, but the Fighting Knights held off a furious rally late by DSU to preserve the 65-63 victory.

The Lady Statesmen held the Fighting Knights to just 35.9 percent on 15-of-39 from the field for the game, while shooting 23-of-54 from the floor for 42.6 percent.  The game swung at the free throw line, where the Knights nailed 29-of-37 free throws to DSU's 16-of-22 attempts. 

DSU outscored LU 26-19 in the paint and 18-10 in second chance points, but it was to no avail.   

Senena Walton led the Lady Statesmen with 17 points and 10 rebounds, her second-straight double-double.  The junior from Clarksdale, Miss., was 8-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. 

Becca Ruckes, a sophomore from Ripley, Miss., added 12 points and six boards in the loss off the bench. 

Lynn placed three players in double figures led by Zacahra Bailey's game-high 21 points.  Tylar Tracey added 15 points and Sharneka McCatty chipped in 10 points.

The No. 12 Lady Statesmen will officially open the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 12, as Delta State welcomes Selma University to Walter Sillers Coliseum.  Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.  Philip Tang and Herb Brooks will have the call on GoStatesmen.com Internet Radio beginning at 6:45 p.m.
