Records Spotlight: Cooper Sports Gulf South Conference Assists Record

CLEVELAND, Miss. - This fall, Delta State University Athletics will highlight some of the department's team and individual record holders in a continued effort to showcase the achievements of various student-athletes throughout Delta State's storied athletic history.

This week, the spotlight shines brightly on Sarita "Bug" Cooper, who is all-time leader in assists in the Gulf South Conference. Cooper, who dished out 963 assists from 2007-2011, sits second in school history in that category behind Ramona Von Boeckman (1975-78), who had 1,005 career assists.

Cooper appears all over the DSU, GSC, and NCAA record books for her prolific passing. Cooper in third in the GSC in single-game assists with 16 against Henderson State in the 2008-2009 season. She also tallied the fourth-highest assists mark of 15 in each of the Lady Statesmen's games against Harding University in that same 2008-2009 campaign.

The Indianola, Miss., native, has the top three single-season assist totals in GSC history as well, as she posted 289 assists in 2008-2009, 279 assists in 2010-2011, and 265 assists in 2009-2010. She also has the GSC record for assists per game with 7.19 for her career, while her 8.72 assists per game in 2010-2011 ranks second all-time in the GSC.

Cooper was the Most Outstanding Player on Delta State's 2009 GSC Championship team and earned back-to-back-to-back GSC West Division First Team All-GSC honors from 2008-2011.

Her career assist mark is the third highest in NCAA Division II history. That number also ranks her ninth all-time across all NCAA Divisions I, II, and III.

She also ranks second in DSU history in games played (134), seventh in field goals attempted (1,141) and sixth in steals (249). She was a Women's Basketball Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-American honoree three times in her career, and was a 2010 and 2011 Daktronics All-American.
