Timely hitting helps DSU pick up split at UAH Chillout

Brittany Gonzales fired a complete game shutout in game two
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DECATUR, Ala. - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team used a pair of two RBI base hits to defeat Kentucky Wesleyan after falling 5-1 in game one to Ohio Dominican on day one at the UAH Charger Chillout.

ODU (1-0) plated three runs in the top of the first, and held on for the win. The Panthers used agressive baserunning, to swipe three bases in the inning, along with an RBI single to shallow center field.

DSU (4-4) answered with an RBI base hit by Maggie Jackson in the bottom of the first to score Amber Adcock.

The Lady Statesmen loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth, before pitcher Rachael Stanzel induced a double play groundout by Kendall Sizemore.

The Panthers plated a run each in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the scoring.

Stanzel (1-0) picked up the complete game win in her first collegiate start, allowing one run on six hits.

Ashleigh Allgood (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned on six hits. Brittany Gonzales pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits.

Allgood (2-for-3) was the only DSU player with multiple hits.

Gonzales worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the second inning of game two, as KWC (0-2) hit into a fielders choice to end the inning.

Panther pitcher Ashlee Winstead retired the first six DSU hitters she faced, including striking out the side in the second.

After Taylor Holland reached on an error to start the bottom of the third, Jordan Cole was hit by a pitch. With two runners on, Adcock knocked in Cole with a base hit to left. Marisa Sanders followed with a two RBI double to right field that gave DSU the 3-0 lead.

Still leading 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Allgood knocked in a pair of runs with a single to left field.

With a lead throughout most of the contest, Gonzales retired 13-of-16 KWC hitters to finish the game.

Gonzales (1-0) allowed only four hits in the complete game shutout.

DSU finished with five hits in the contest.

The Lady Statesmen will compete on day two of the UAH Charger Chillout with a 12:30 p.m. CST scheduled start versus Quincy.
