Tombers named National Swimmer of the Week

SOMERS, Wis. - Following the effort that resulted in a new school record for the 400-Individual Medley being set, Melanie Tombers was named by CollegeSwimming.com as Counsilman Hunsaker Women's Division II Swimmer of the Week.

Tombers, a freshman from Duesseldorf, Germany, eclipsed an eight-year-old school mark with a new time of 4:27.83.  The time not only eclipsed the old mark, it sits as the top Division II time of the season to date.

"Anytime a record is broken it is great to see it happen," commented head coach Dan'l Murray.  "Melanie has been working very hard and adapting to the current training phase.  She is a talented athlete who is not afraid to race.  It was a great swim to watch and we are very proud of her."

Tombers set the mark while competing at Drury University in Springfield, Mo., where she would add another victory in the 500-Freestyle (5:03.73) and a runner-up finish in the 200-Freestyle (1:55.24).

This marks the first time Delta State has had a swimmer receive the Counsilman Hunsaker Women's Division II Swimmer of the Week award.

"It is a great honor to receive a national award," added Murray.  "Melanie is very deserving.  She is a highly coachable athlete who looks to improve daily and is dedicated to working hard.  Not only is she a great athlete, but she has also excelled in the classroom which speaks to her character."

Delta State just completed a set of weekend meets from Arkadelphia, Ark., where DSU was able to sweep victories from Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist.  The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen are off until hosting the DSU Christmas Invitational from the DSU Aquatics Center Dec. 14-17.
