Statesmen Football adds 34 to 2015 Signing Class



CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State University head football coach Todd Cooley announced the addition of 24 signees to the 2015 signing class for the Statesmen. DSU added 10 mid-year transfers in January to bring the total to 33 newcomers for the upcoming season. This year's class includes 16 junior college/four-year transfers and 18 high school signees.

Delta State's class includes one quarterback, 10 offensive linemen, seven wide receivers, one running back, one fullback, five linebackers, four defensive linemen, and five defensive backs. The complete class is listed below.

"We are very excited about the talented student-athletes we've added to the family today," Cooley said. "We certainly addressed some of our needs, while bringing in some highly-talented skill players on both sides of the ball."

SIGNING CLASS NOTES:
 - 16 transfers and 18 high school student-athletes make up the class
 - Six states are represented in the class, including 11 from Mississippi
 - DSU's 10 offensive line signees average 6-foot-4 and 306 pounds
 - The 2015 class averaged a 20 on the ACT exam

FEBRUARY SIGNEES
DE/LB | Isaac Bails (6-2 | 240) – Ripley, Miss./Northeast Miss. CC
Played in six games this past season for NE Mississippi CC and head coach Rickey Smither. The 6-Foot-2, 240-pound bruiser also logged time at running back. The Ripley, Miss., native was a standout at Ripley High School in football and basketball. He was named All-District at RHS.

OL | Jordan Barge (6-5/335) – Loganville, Ga./LA Valley CC
Played two seasons for LA Valley Community College on the offensive line.  The massive guard helped LA Valley to a fast start in 2014 with his ability to collapse a defensive line and was named a Junior College All-American at the end of the season. Prior to playing at LA Valley, Barge starred at Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia, where he saw time on the offensive and defensive lines. Barge helped GHS to a 15-0 record and the Georgia state title as a senior.
 
QB | Tyler Cameron (6-4/205) – Foley, Ala./Foley High School
One of the top quarterback prospects in Alabama, Cameron led Foley High School to the Class 7A semifinals in 2014 after completing 139-of-255 passes for 1,889 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also rushed for four scores. He was a second-team Coastal Alabama All-Region pick by AL.com.  He also participated in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game, tossing the game-winning touchdown pass on the games final play to give Alabama a 36-30 win. Cameron threw for 2,205 yards and 19 touchdowns his junior year.
 
DB | Kardale Clark (5-9 | 170) - Marrero, La./John Ehert High School
Registered 50 tackles and four interceptions last season for John Ehert High School. The Marrero, Louisiana, helped the Patriots to a 9-2 record and a 5-0 District 8-5A mark and a 5A playoff berth
 
DB | Lewis Cousins/ (6'0/185)/Gainesville, Ga./ Gainesville High School
The Gainesville, Georgia, native made 123 solo tackles his junior year for Gainesville HS. He helped GHS reach the semifinals of the 2014 Georgia High School 5A playoffs as a senior season. During the run, Gainesville finished 11-3 overall and 8-1 in district play.
 
OL | Josh Cunningham (6-2 | 270) – Smithdale, Miss./Northwestern (La.) State University
Cunningham played two seasons at Northwestern State University on the offensive line. Injuries hampered the talented linemen during his time in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Prior to his time at NSU, Cunningham was a two-time All-State selection at Parklane Academy for coach Bo Milton. During his final two seasons at PA, the 6-foot-2 lineman did not give up a sack, while leading the team in knockdown blocks. The Smithdale, Miss., native was also a participant in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game.

LB | Jamel Dennis (5-11 | 215) – Oxford, Miss./Northeast Miss. CC
Dennis played two seasons for coach Rickey Smither and Northeast Mississippi CC at linebacker. As a sophomore, Dennis led NECC in tackles (73), with 16.5 tackles-for-loss and 8.5 sacks. He recorded a season-high 17 tackles against Pearl River CC and 12 in the season finale versus Holmes CC. His freshman season at NECC was even more impressive, as the Oxford, Miss., native tallied 96 tackles, 11 tackles-for-loss and three sacks. Prior to signing with NECC, Dennis was an All-State selection at Lafayette High School.

WR | La'Derriel Ester (6-3 | 205) - Memphis, Tenn./ Whitehaven High School
Ester helped his Whitehaven squad to a 12-1 record with a 6-0 record in 6-A District Region 16 play. He also lettered in baseball at Whitehaven.
  
LB | Broderick Fordham (6-3 | 235) - Leland, Miss./Holmes CC
Fordham played in nine games for Holmes CC recording 51 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, and three sacks during in 2014. He averaged 5.7 tackles per game. He played at Leland High School before signing with Holmes CC.
 
TE/WR | Benji Galbraith/ (6-5 | 218) - Nesbit, Miss./ Lewisburg High School
Galbraith played football, baseball, and soccer at Lewisburg High School. The 6-Foot-5 receiver caught 42 passes for 745 yards and eight touchdowns and averaged 17.7 yards per game in 2014.
 
WR | Leon Green (6-4 | 185) - Cleveland, Miss./ Eastside High School
Green caught 37 passes for 594 yards and three touchdowns his senior year at Eastside HS in Cleveland, Miss. He averaged 49.5 yards per game while averaging 16.1 yards per catch. He also played defensive back during his high school years recording 15 tackles with an interception.
 
OL | Thomas Head (6-4 | 285) - Dacula, Ga./ Hebron Christian Academy
Head played on the offensive and defensive lines at Hebron Christian in Dacula, Georgia. He registered 13 tackles, sacking the quarterback once his senior season.

OL | Payton Hollis (6-3 | 270) - Bastrop, La./ Bastrop High School                                        
Hollis played in all of Bastrop's game last season. He helped the offense average 36 points per game. He helped the Rams reach the playoff last season. He was one of the 100 best offensive linemen in the state.
 
WR | Malik Honeycutt (6-1 | 183) – Tallahassee, Florida/Godby HS
Honeycutt played 13 games his senior season for under coach Todd Lanter at Godby HS in Tallahassee, Florida. He had 27 receptions for 418 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 15.5 yards per catch. He was awarded Offensive Player of the Game, compiling three receptions for 58 yards against Bishop Kenny HS.

FB/LB | William Hood (6-1 | 210) - Duncan, Miss./Bayou Academy
Hood played four seasons at Bayou Academy, where he played fullback and linebacker for coach Jimmy Hicks. He is the son of Cary and Andrienne Hood.
 
OL | Dallin Johnson (6-4 | 300) – Daphne, Alabama/Daphne HS
Johnson played offensive tackle for the Trojans under coach Glenn Vickery. The 300-pounder led Daphne to a 7-4-1 record in the regular season, going 7-1 in regional play.
 
OL | Dekendrick Johnson (6-1 | 325) – Winnsboro, La./Southwest Miss. CC
Johnson spent the past two seasons as an anchor on the offensive line for Southwest Mississippi CC. The 6-1, 325-pound guard helped SWCC average 243.5 yards rushing per game, while featuring two backs with over 700 yards on the ground. As a freshman, SWCC averaged 183.0 yards rushing per game. Prior to signing with Southwest, Johnson starred on the offensive and defensive lines at Franklin Parish High School with current Statesman linebacker Wilson Curtis and safety Joreco Beckwith.
 
OL | John McNamara (6-10 | 355) – St. Louis, Missouri/Lindbergh HS
McNamara played three seasons for the Flyers under coach Tom Beauchamp. The 6-foot-10 powerhouse totaled 58 solo tackles as a defensive lineman, averaging 3 per game as well as 11 tackles-for-loss. He also played center for the school's basketball team, collecting 79 points and 56 total rebounds over the course of two seasons.
 
OL | Brent Moore (6-1 | 285) - Defuniak Springs, Florida/Walton HS
Moore played football as a center for the Braves under coach Jimmy Ray Stephens as well as being a designated hitter for the school's baseball team under coach Shane Carnley.
 
S | Brandon Phillips (6-0 | 200) – Metairie, La./Bishop Rummel High School
One of the most accomplished athletes in this year's class, Phillips helped guide Rummel High School to two Louisiana State Championships in 2012 (Class 5A) and 2013 (Division I), but fell just short of a three-peat in the Division I semifinals this year. As a senior, Phillips finished second on the team in rushing yards (726) and touchdowns (8). He also caught 10 passes for 165 yards and two more scores in addition to being a District 9-5A All-District selection as a safety. Phillips was named to NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune's All-Metro team as an athlete in his final season at BRHS.
 
WR | Darius Powell (5-10 |181) – Foley, Alabama/UAB
Powell played 28 games in three years at UAB as both a defensive back and wide receiver under coach Bill Clark. The 5-foot-10, junior compiled 224 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns and had 18 tackles as a defensive back. He was a three-year starting quarterback in his hometown of Foley, Alabama, at Foley HS. In his first season, Powell passed for 1,780 yards and ran for 756 yards. He had 11 touchdowns his senior year, seven rushing and was named Optimist Player of the Week three times and was an All-Baldwin County selection.
 
CB | Zedrick Raymond (5-11 | 180) – Mobile, Alabama/Murphy HS
Raymond played three seasons under coach Rick Cauley for the Murphy HS. The 5-foot-11, cornerback recorded 141 total tackles, 53 solo, nine interceptions, and 15 pass deflections. He recorded eight tackles against Vigor HS, earning Defensive Player of the Game honors his sophomore year.

WR | Braylen Rochell (6-4 | 187) – Memphis, Tennessee/Whitehaven HS
Rochell played two seasons under coach Rodney Saulsberry at Whitehave HS in Memphis, Tennessee. He started 11 games for the Tigers in his junior year, finishing with 15 catches for more than 400 yards and seven touchdowns. He ran a 4.87 40-yard dash with a 4.47 shuttle and a 33.4" vertical at the Birmingham Nike Football Camp.
 
LB | Keijne Thomas (6-0 | 190) – Conyers, Georgia/Rockdale HS
Thomas played 16 games at running back and strong safety for coach Venson Elder at Rockdale HS in Conyers, Georgia. His senior year, he carried the ball 19 times for 145 yards and three touchdowns. On the defensive side, he recorded 67 total tackles, 45 solo, and three interceptions.

MID-YEAR TRANSFERS
OL | Dequin Andrews (6-4 | 285) - Farmerville, La./Coahoma CC
Andrews played one season at Copiah-Lincoln CC and one season at Coahoma CC before signing with the Statesmen. The 6-foot-4 lineman is a product of Farmerville High School, where he played for Joe Spatfoa. Andrews also lettered in powerlifting while at FHS.

DE | Erin Brown (6-3 | 270) - West Monroe, La./Hinds CC
Brown played in nine games as a sophomore at Hinds, totaling 41 tackles and 4.5 tackles-for-loss. The 6-foot-3 defensive end also recorded a sack and two pass breakups this season. As a freshman, Brown recorded 54 tackles and seven sacks for head coach Gene Murphy and the Eagles.

OL | Christopher Cooper (6-3 | 315) - Dothan, Ala./Iowa Central CC
Cooper played in eight games for head coach Kevin Twait and offensive line coach Duane Twait at Iowa Central this season. The powerful lineman finished the year among the team's leaders in blocking percentage.

RB | Diquan Davis (5-11 | 180) - Greenville, Miss./Copiah-Lincoln CC
Davis played in 11 games this season for head coach Glenn Davis and the Wolves. The speedster rushed 67 times for 339 yards and four touchdowns, while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. As a freshman, Davis rushed 23 times for 143 yards, while playing in nine games. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry during his first year of collegiate competition.

WR | K'Shun Evans (6-4 | 195) - Raleigh, Miss./Coahoma CC
Evans led Coahoma with 34 receptions for 458 yards and five touchdowns this season, averaging 65.8 yards per game. The 6-Foot-4, receiver hauled in 4.9 receptions per game and averaged 13.5 yards per catch. As a freshman in 2013, Evans caught 10 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns.

DL | Philanteus Jarrett (6-4 | 285) - Hollandale, Miss./Southeastern Louisiana
Jarrett played two seasons for coach Glenn Davis at Copiah-Lincoln CC, where he tallied 22 tackles and three tackles-for-loss as a sophomore, before signing with Southeastern Louisiana University.  The Hollandale, Mississippi native, helped the Lions to the 2013 Southland Conference title as a redshirt. The former Hollandale-Simmons product was an All-District and All-State selection in high school.

DB | De'Monterius Kendrick (6-0 | 185) - Crystal Springs, Miss./Holmes CC
Kendrick played in nine games for the Bulldogs, recording 10 tackles and a tackle-for-loss. The rarely tested defensive back recorded a season-high three tackles against Mississippi Delta Community College.

LB | Benny McCall (6-2 | 225) - Walls, Miss./Itawamba CC
McCall played in nine games for head coach Sean Cannon and ICC this past year, recording 41 tackles at his linebacker position. McCall recorded a season-high 10 tackles and a tackle-for-loss in the season finale versus Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. As a freshman, McCall played linebacker for undefeated East Mississippi Community College (12-0), where he recorded nine tackles in 11 games for the Lions.

DB | De'Quan Reddick (6-0 | 205) - Palmetto, Fla./New Mexico Military
One of the top junior college safeties in the country a year ago, Reddick helped lead New Mexico Military to a victory in the El Torro Bowl while leading the Broncos in tackles with 72. He also recorded six tackles-for-loss and picked-off three passes. A two-year starter for coach Joe Fortchner at NMMI, Reddick tallied over 100 tackles in his time in Roswell, N.M. As a freshman, Reddick totaled 32 tackles, including 3.2 tackles-for-loss and one interception. Prior to playing at NMMI, Reddick was a standout for Palmetto High School and coach Dave Marino. Reddick was named PHS Defensive Player of the Year and was an All-District performer.
 
DB | Tra'vez Taylor (6-0 | 178) - Summit, Miss./Southwest Miss. CC
Taylor played in five games this season after battling injuries for SWCC. The cover corner totaled 10 tackles, including a season-high eight versus National Junior College Athletic Association National Champion East Mississippi Community College. Taylor spent his freshman season at Louisiana Tech University.
