Walker and Cooper named DakTronics All-Americans

Bug Cooper was one of two Lady Statesmen named DakTronics All-Americans.
STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Lady Statesmen teammates Veronica Walker and Bug Cooper were both named to the DakTronics Division II All-American team as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Walker (Indianola, Miss./Gentry HS) was named a First Team All-American, while Cooper, a former high school teammate of Walker's was named to the Third Team. The two Lady Statesmen were the only players from the Gulf South Conference to be named to the DakTronics All-America teams.

Walker averaged 20.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest for the Lady Statesmen this season. She led the GSC in four statistical categories – scoring, rebounding, blocked shots per game (1.29) and field goal percentage (.650). Walker's dominance throughout the season earned her the GSC West Division Player of the Year award.

In addition to leading the GSC, Walker was the national Division II leader in field goal percentage. She also ranked in the top 11 in scoring and blocked shots per game. A sophomore, Walker was the only underclassmen named to any of the three All-America teams.

A big part of Walker and the Lady Statesmen's success can be attributed to Cooper, who led the NCAA with 8.5 assists per game. For the year, she totaled 265 assists and broke the GSC record for career assists earlier in the season.

Cooper averaged 10.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest, and was an All-GSC West honoree.

Together, Walker and Cooper helped lead the Lady Statesmen to the NCAA South Region tournament championship game – making DSU among the final 16 teams in the tournament.

Four-time All-American Johannah Leedham of Franklin Pierce (N.H.) was named the Division II Player of the Year. The senior from Ellesmere Port, England averaged 26.7 points per game and is a member of the British Olympic team.
