Colton Mitchell, a senior left-handed pitcher for the Statesmen Baseball team, has been named the GoStatesmen.com Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Apr. 7. It's the first honor of the year for Mitchell.
Mitchell helped lead the Statesmen to a 2-0 victory over West Alabama on Saturday, pitching a complete game shutout while striking out 13 Tigers' batters. Mitchell gave up just five hits and one walk, picking up his third win of the season.
The Lake, Miss. native is 3-1 on the season with a 4.09 era in six starts and eight appearances. The 13 strikeouts is a career high for the pitcher and leads individual performances for the year, as well as tying the team high on the season when three pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts against Florida Southern.
Mitchell and the Statesmen return to action Wednesday with a midweek game against Arkansas-Monticello at home before hosting Shorter for a three-game series this weekend.
