Freshman outfielder Mariah Alvarez has been named GoStatesmen.com Athlete of the Week for her outstanding play last week, as she helped the Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team pick up a pair of wins, including a victory over GSC leader, Shorter University.
Alvarez, who was also named Gulf South Conference Player of the week, was the first DSU player to earn the honor since March of 2010. Alvarez finished the week with an impressive .667 batting average, going a combined 10-for-17 with one double, a home run and seven RBIs against Shorter and West Georgia.
The Saginaw, Texas native had multiple hits in three-of-four games and drove in at least one run in each contest, including a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 13th inning and her third career home run versus West Georgia on Saturday, March 31.
Alvarez currently ranks ninth in the GSC with a .392 batting average, including a .426 clip in GSC contests.
The Lady Statesmen return to action on Saturday, April 6 at University Field for a GSC doubleheder with the University of North Alabama. DSU will also honor its five seniors. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
