Winner of the Charles S. Kerg Senior Student-Athlete of the Year Award. Chovanec, a four-year letter winner and three-year starter for Statesmen baseball, captured the second consecutive Kerg Award for the program. The Inez, Texas native is a three-time All-GSC selection and a two-time NCAA All-South Region pick. During his celebrated career, the Statesmen are 155-51 with a 2012 GSC championship and a national runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II College World Series.
This year, the centerfielder has led the Statesmen to a 38-11 record and the GSC regular season title. Along the way, Chovanec is batting .340 while ranking second in the GSC with 66 hits. He ranks among the team leaders is runs scored, stolen bases and RBIs. His 71 career stolen bases rank second in program history.
Off the field, the exercise science major has excelled at even higher levels, becoming DSU baseball's 27th Capitol One/CoSIDA Academic All-American. The three-time GSC Academic Team selection graduated in December with a 3.84 GPA and is currently pursuing a master's of business administration degree.
