Mattia Schirru, a freshman on the Delta State Swimming & Diving team, captures his first CableONE GoStatesmen.com Male Student-Athlete of the Week award on Monday, Dec. 21 after leading the Statesmen to a second place finish in the DSU Christmas Invitational.

The Giaveno, Italy native set a new school record in the 50-Freestyle, clinching second place in 20.24. In the preliminaries, Serghei Golban of Lindenwood broke a 14-year old pool record coming first place with a time of 19.56.

The men's 400-Freestyle relay team of Mattia Schirru, Matteo Fraschi, Fabrice Wendel and Dylon Johnson shattered the school/pool record with a 2:56.04.

He also helped the Statesmen 200-Medley relay team of Cody Lavoie, Matteo Fraschi, Fabrice Wendel and Schirru finish in second place with a time of 1:29.42.
