FLORENCE, Ala. – The Delta State Lady Statesmen soccer team concluded the 2009 season with an 8-1 defeat at the hands of the North Alabama Lady Lions on Wednesday.
Tassia Augusto scored four goals for the Lady Lions (16-2-1), who finished Gulf South Conference play with a perfect 7-0 record.
The Lady Statesmen (2-11) were winless in seven conference matches this season.
Kristin Stensholt scored her second goal of the season in the 60th minute to provide the Lady Statesmen's only tally. Jackie Kelly provided the assist.
The Lady Lions controlled the pace of play throughout the match, and ended up outshooting Delta State 27-1. Sam Le Jeune made four saves in goal for the Lady Statesmen.
Chloe Roberts scored two goals for the Lady Lions.
Wednesday's game marked the last career collegiate match for Delta State senior defender Renee Melson, who lettered four years for the Lady Statesmen. Melson made her second consecutive start.
Melson was the only one of three seniors on the roster who played in the match. Mikael Mendez was ineligible to play after picking up a red card in Delta State's home finale Sunday.
Melissa Webber, who was also honored at Delta Field on Sunday, suffered a season-ending injury prior to the start of the season.
