PENSACOLA, Fla. -The Delta State University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the University of West Florida Saturday at Spooner Field-Pelican Park 2-5 and 2-0. The Statesmen remained .500 on the season at 4-4, while the Argonauts moved to 6-3. Game three of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
In game one, the Argonauts took advantage of Delta State's lack of offense to claim a 5-2 win. UWF's Kevin Johnson (1-0) earned the win after pitching 8.2 innings of two run baseball. Johnson allowed just two runs on four hits with for walks and five strikeouts in the win.
The Argonauts built a 5-0 lead headed into the ninth, before the Statesmen finally scored two runs in the top of the ninth. It would not be enough, as the UWF bullpen closed out the win on Scott Velasco's third save.
Korey Cunningham (1-1) took the loss. The senior from Clinton pitched five innings allowing four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
In game two, the Statesmen road the right arm of senior
Joey Haston (1-0) to a 2-0 victory. The senior from McMinnville, Tenn., pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits on the day. He also recorded one walk and five strikeouts.
T.J. Hitt's RBI-double in the fourth scoring
Steven Oswald gave the Statsmen a 1-0 lead.
DSU doubled the margin in the seventh, as Hitt scored on
Michael Niemann's RBI single to right.
Haston made it hold up for the Statesmen, evening the series at 1-1.
Dustin Brenton (0-1) took the loss for UWF after pitching five innings.
Game three of the series is set for Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Spooner Park-Pelican Field.
