HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Huntsville baseball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit on Tuesday to defeat Delta State, 13-7, at Joe Davis Stadium. The Chargers (11-2) used a 10-hit attack and took advantage of three Statesmen (6-8) errors to claim the win.
Delta State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on
Devin Goodwin's second home run of the year, a shot to left off UAH starter Michael McKay.
The Chargers tied it up in the bottom of the first on Ryan McRory's two-run blast over the right field wall off DSU hurler
Joey Haston.
UAH would tack on five more runs to lead 7-2 leaded into the top of sixth inning.
In the sixth, DSU's
Steven Oswald plated the second and third runners of the inning on a two-RBI single to left to make it a two score game at 5-7 UAH.
Nick Huckaby would get all three runs back for UAH with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the sixth to open the game up once again at 5-10 Chargers.
Cade Hoggard's two-run home run in the top of the seventh gave the Statesmen a ray of light that was quickly extinguished by UAH in the bottom of the eighth. The Chargers would add three insurance runs to take the game 7-13 over DSU.
Delta State used five different pitchers in the game with Haston (1-2) taking the loss after working just 1.2 innings. The McMinnville, Tenn., native allowed six earned runs on five hits with a walk.
Marcus Wilson (2.1),
Nathan Hardy (1.2),
Toby Easterly (1.2), and
Levi Bishop (1.0) all worked in relief.
Alabama-Huntsville's McKay (1-0) earned the win after tossing 5.2 innings of five run baseball. Jeff Dunlap (4) recorded the save after working the eighth and ninth.
Goodwin went 3-for-5 with a run scored, home run, and two RBIs to lead the Statesmen.
Delta State will look to rebound this weekend with a three game series with the Tigers of the University of West Alabama at Ferriss Field. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. followed by Sunday's single game at 2 p.m.
