ARKADELPHIA, Ark- For the seventh consecutive game, the Delta State University Statesmen baseball team scored in double-digits, and each time they have gotten the win. Saturday's contest was a thriller from the first pitch, as Delta State picked up the 16-10 victory over Ouachita Baptist to open up GSC play.
The Statesmen, winners of eight straight, improve to 14-9 over all and 1-0 in the GSC, while the Tigers fall to 21-8, and 0-1 in league play.
Devin Goodwin started things off for the Statesmen with a leadoff double, and scored two batters later with a sacrifice fly from
Clay Sartain. With runners on first and second,
T.J. Hitt doubled down the left-field line to score two more runs for the Statesmen. Three batters later,
Patrick Strack (4) cleared the bases with a three-run home run. After batting through the lineup, the Statesmen scored three more runs with another three-run home run this time by Sartain (3). After the top of the first, DSU lead 10-0.
Ouachita answered back in the second, scoring eight runs on four hits in the home half off of starter
Korey Cunningham.
Each traded a pair of runs in the middle innings, before the Statesmen sealed the win in the ninth, knocking in four runs capped off by a three-run double from Sartain.
Sartain finished 2-for-5 at the plate, while knocking in a career-high eight runs. Goodwin finished 3-for-3 and teammate
Michael Niemann also finished with three hits on the day.
Junior
Brandon Hall (1-1) earned the win for the Statesmen, despite giving up two runs in 2.0 innings of relief.
Jeffery Helferich (4-3) was credited with the loss, lasting only 2/3 of an inning giving up 10 runs on eight hits in the GSC West Division opener.
The Statesmen conclude the three-game series with a double-header on Sunday at Rab Rodgers Field. First pitch is set for noon.
