ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Delta State University baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Ouachita Baptist University with a pair of wins, 11-0 and 7-2, on Sunday at Rab Rogers Field. The Statesmen (16-9, 3-0 Gulf South Conference West) outscored the Tigers (21-10, 0-3 GSCW), 30-12, in the three game series to extend their winning streak to 10 games.
The Statesmen in game one rode the arm of
Cody Kelley (2-1), who tossed eight shutout innings, in an 11-0 win. After five scoreless innings, the Statesmen exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth thanks in part to
Cade Hoggard's three-run home run and
Devin Goodwin's two-run blast.
DSU tagged on three runs in the ninth to complete the shut out.
Goodwin, a senior shortstop from Russellville, Ala., went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Hoggard collected two hits in four at-bats with four RBIs.
Kelley, a junior from Louisville, picked up the win after tossing eight innings allowing three hits with four walks and a season-high nine strikeouts.
In game two, the Statesmen broke a 2-2 tie in the top of seventh with five runs to claim the 7-2 win and complete the series sweep.
Goodwin continued his torrid hitting, leading off the game with a home run to left. DSU extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth on
T.J. Hitt's RBI-double to right.
OBU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of RBI-singles by Brad Green and Dave Dibbens.
In the seventh, the Statesmen plated five runs on three hits, including Hoggard's two-RBI single to right.
Joey Haston (3-2) sat down the side in the seventh to close out the complete game win. The McMinnville, Tenn., native pitched seven innings allowing two runs on just four hits with two strikeouts.
Patrick Lemmond (1-1) took the loss in relief, allowing five runs on three hits.
Goodwin collected two hits on the day to lead DSU, while Hoggard and Hitt drove in two runs apiece.
The Statesmen will return to action on Wednesday versus West Alabama in Jackson. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Trustmark Park.
