Statesmen take two from Christian Brothers, 12-2 and 12-4

CLEVELAND- After a slight bump in the midweek that snapped a season-high 10 game winning streak, the Delta State University Statesmen (18-10, 5-0) got back on track, picking up two wins in GSC action Saturday afternoon over Christian Brothers, 12-2 and 12-4 at Ferriss Field. 

In game one, the Statesmen rallied for six unanswered runs heading into the sixth inning, after plating four in the second. With runners on the corners, Josh Gordon doubled to right field to bring home the first run in the game. Two batters later, Devin Goodwin knocked in two more with a single up the middle, followed by an RBI-single from Clay Sartain

Christian Brothers (7-15, 0-2 GSC) responded with two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Statesmen closed the game out in the seventh, plating four runs capped by a two-run single by Anthony Palasini

Goodwin finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Palasini finished with two hits and a game-high three RBIs. 

Korey Cunningham (3-2) grabbed the win, pitching 7.0 innings and allowing two runs on four hits, including eight strikeouts. 

In game two, CBU opened up with 1-0 lead in the first before the Statesmen responded with 12 unanswered runs. 

The visitors would score three more in the top of the seventh, but the deficit was too much. 

Sartain finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Matthew Little knocked in three runs on one hit. 

Joey Haton (4-2) grabbed the win, pitching 5.0 innings giving up four hits and allowing just one run. 

The Statesmen will be looking for the sweep Sunday, as they close out the series with Christian Brothers. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
