CLEVELAND- The Delta State University Statesmen (19-10, 6-0 GSC) baseball team picked up their second GSC sweep on the season, as they pounded Christian Brothers, 18-4, Sunday afternoon in front of 875 at Ferriss Field.
Senior second baseman Clay Sartian made history on his first at bat, an RBI-double down the left-field line, putting him atop of DSU's career doubles list with 61, surpassing Jud Thigpen (2001-2004).
The Statesmen scored five runs to open the ballgame, led by Sartain's RBI.
Kellen Bozeman singled up the middle to score two more, before a two-run double by
Josh Gordon.
The Buccaneers (7-16, 0-3) cut the lead to four with a run in the second, but the Statesmen followed up with a nine run effort in the bottom half. Bozeman (7) smashed a grand-slam as the fourth hitter of the inning. That was followed by a two-run single by
Patrick Strack, before
Devin Goodwin (10) hit a three-run bomb to close out the inning.
CBU fought back, adding two in the third and one in the fourth, but the Statesmen continued to distance themselves, scoring four more in the fourth before the game was called after seven.
Cody Kelly (3-1) picked up the win, pitching 4.0 innings giving up three runs on five hits.
Cary Crain (1-2) gets the loss, working one inning, while giving up 12 runs on eight hits.
Bozeman and
Michael Niemann finished 3-for-4 at the plate; however, Bozeman knocked in seven RBIs.
The Statesmen will take a break from conference play on Wednesday, as they battle local rival Mississippi Valley State. First pitch at Ferriss Filed is set for 6:30 p.m.
