CLEVELAND- Senior pitcher
Joey Haston stuck out a season-high 10 batters, as the McMinnville, Tenn., native led the Statesmen to a 5-3 win in game two, sweeping Arkansas-Monticello after winning game one 11-1. Delta State (27-13, 13-2) moved to within a game of Southern Arkansas in the GSC West, while the Boll Weevils fall to 7-30-1, and 1-11 in league play.
The Boll Weevils took an early 1-0 lead following a solo-shot by Arian Mercedes in the third inning. The Statesmen quickly tied it after the starting pitcher Rod Williams walked
Anthony Palasini with the bases loaded in the bottom half.
The Statesmen broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth inning following after an error on the shortstop plated two runs with the bases loaded.
Cade Hoggard followed suit two batters later with a two-run double to extend the lead to 5-1.
UAM plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game, 5-3.
Haston (6-2) pitched 6.2 innings allowing three runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts for the win.
Tyler Henry (0-4) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings in relief.
Goodwin and
Kellen Bozeman finished with two hits apiece, while Hoggard finished with two RBI's.
In the opening contest, the Statesmen plated four runs in the first without recording a hit.
UAM plated a run in the second before the Statesmen added one in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-1 contest.
Delta State scored six unanswered highlighted by a solo-shot by
Matthew Little in the sixth. Delta State would end the game in the eighth, following an RBI single by
Josh Gordon for the run-rule win.
Trey Griffin (5-0) earned the win, pitching 7.0 innings allowing six hits and just one run with three strikeouts.
Josh Gordon finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Devin Goodwin also knocked in three runs on his 11th home run over the leftfield deck.
The Statesmen will be on the road Tuesday and Wednesday in Montevallo, Ala., as they take on the Falcons of the University of Montevallo. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Kermit Johnson Field.
