MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Offense was plentiful for the No. 17 ranked Delta State University Statesmen (29-13), as the green-and-white scored 13 runs on 18 hits en route to Wednesday's 13-3 win over the Falcons (22-24-1) of the University of Montevallo at Kermit A. Johnson Field. The win extended DSU's win streak to five games.
The Statesmen took advantage of two errors in the top of the first inning, scoring five runs on four hits. DSU got three-straight RBI-singles out of
Anthony Palasini,
Josh Gordon, and
Steven Oswald to highlight the inning.
In the second, DSU added three runs to take an 8-0 lead, highlighted by
Michael Niemann's solo home run to dead center and
Cade Hoggard's RBI-single to left.
DSU made it 9-0 in the third, as
Clay Sartain scored his second run of the game.
Montevallo cut into the green-and-white lead on Ryan Norman's RBI-groundout, making it 9-1 Delta State.
DSU would add a single run in the seventh, before exploding for three runs on a solo home run by
Kellen Bozeman (11) and a two-run blast by Gordon (1) in the eighth to take a 13-1 lead.
UM scratched out runs in the eighth and ninth to make the final 13-3 Statesmen.
The Statesmen scored 13 runs on 18 hits with one errors, while the Falcons scored three runs on five hits with three errors.
Jason Coats (1-0) earned his first career win for the Statesmen. The junior from Starkville pitched 4.0 innings, allowing one run on two hit with six strikeouts. DSU used four other pitchers in relief.
Brandon Aldridge (2-6) was saddled with the loss, allowing nine runs on 12 hits.
Niemann, Oswald, and Hoggard each recorded three hits to lead the Statesmen.
The Statesmen will travel to Russellville, Ark., to face the Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech University this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m., while Sunday's game is set for 1 p.m. The series will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network starting 15 minutes prior to first pitch.
