LORMAN, Miss. – The Delta State Lady Statesmen soccer team started the season off on the right foot as it defeated NCAA Division I program Alcorn State 2-1 on Monday at Lady Braves Field.
Jackie Kelly (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River HS) and
Kristin Stensholt (Melbourne, Australia/Kingswood College) scored goals for the Lady Statesmen, who improved to 1-0 on the season.
Freshman goalkeeper
Sam Le Jeune (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) gave up Alcorn's lone goal three minutes in, but tallied a clean sheet for the final 87 minutes of play. Le Jeune recorded five saves in the game.
Kelly, one of the team's six freshmen, scored her first collegiate goal midway through the first half to tie the game at 1-1. Stensholt netted the game-winner in the 32nd minute.
Defenders
Sam Bossert (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) and
Joy Johnson (Waveland, Miss./Waveland HS/Pearl River CC) were solid in the backfield according to head coach Jim Allen.
The Lady Statesmen return to action Tuesday when they face Mississippi College in Clinton. The game, the first of a men's-women's doubleheader, will start at 2 p.m.
