Lady Statesmen shutout in loss to UNA

CLEVELAND, Miss.-The Delta State University Lady Statesmen soccer team wanted to close its season out with an upset over the North Alabama Lions, but the Lions scored two goals in each half to win 4-0 Wednesday at Delta Field.

The Lady Statesmen were shutout for the seventh time this season in the loss.

DSU kept the match scoreless until the 35th minute, when Jennifer Osmond put away her 10th goal of the season.

UNA added to its lead over three minutes later with a Stephanie Bradshaw finish, giving the Lions the 2-0 lead after the first 45 minutes.

UNA (14-3-0, 6-1) used a tough defense that did not allow a Lady Statesmen shot in the first half of play.

The Lions did not waste time adding to their lead in the second half, when the NCAA Division II leader in goals, Chloe Roberts, added her 25th tally of the season against backup keeper Faith Wright in the 48th minute.

Hollie Loud notched her fifth goal of the season in the 79th minute to close the scoring with a long range bomb that clanked the crossbar, and landed just beyond the goal line.

UNA outshot the Lady Statesmen 26-3 in the contest. The Lions blasted 13 shots on goal, while DSU finished with two.

Melinda Esplin and Jackie Kelly recorded the Lady Statesmen shots on target.

The Lady Statesmen finish the 2010 campaign with a 4-13-1 mark overall, and an 0-7 ledger in Gulf South Conference play.
