Lady Statesmen rally from two goals down; tie Belhaven

CLEVELAND-Payten Pearson scored in the 79th minute, to tie the game at three, as the Delta State University soccer team rallied from a two goal deficit in a 3-3 tie with Belhaven, Tuesday at Delta Field.

Belhaven (1-6-1) took a quick 1-0 lead in the 5th minute, with a goal from Krista Brizeno. Brizeno was the main threat for the Lady Blazers, as she had two shots clang off the crossbar.

Jackie Kelly answered for Delta State in the 36th minute, with a clean finish, off an assist from Jessie Reeder.

The Lady Blazers took a 3-1 lead in the 69th minute with a powerful shot from MaryBeth  Weber.

Just when the Lady Statesmen (3-8-1) looked to be on their way to a fifth straight loss, freshman Charlotte Benson headed in a Pearson corner in the 76th minute to make the score 3-2.

Less than three minutes later, Pearson took advantage of a defensive mistake by BU, and snuck the ball just inside the post to tie the game at 3-3.

Both overtimes were played primarily in the midfield, as the teams combined for only five total shots.

BU outshot the Lady Statesmen 18-16, and finished with 10 shots on goal, compared to eight for DSU.

Megan Galloway recorded seven big saves for the Lady Statesmen in the tie.

DSU will return to the pitch on Oct. 10, as they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., to take on Ouachita Baptist.

OBU defeated the Lady Statesmen 2-0 on Sept. 24.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
