No. 14 Statesmen one-hit Falcons in 6-1 win

Griffin worked six innings of one-hit baseball Wednesday in DSU's 6-1 win over Montevallo.
CLEVELAND –The No. 14 Statesmen (4-1-1) of Delta State University used the arms of Trey Griffin and Brent Hallmark to one-hit the Falcons (3-6) of the University of Montevallo on Wednesday and claim the series sweep with a 6-1 win at Ferriss Field.

The Statesmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third on Josh Gordon's sacrifice fly to left.

Montevallo tied it in the fourth on Josh Dabbs' solo home run.

DSU took a 2-1 lead in the fifth, as Chris Escobar scored from third on a wild pitch.

The Statesmen extended the lead to 4-1 in the sixth, as Michael Vinson scored from third on a pass ball and Billy Ray Todd drove in another run with a sac-fly to left.

Patrick Taylor sealed the win for the Statesmen in the seventh with a two-RBI single to right giving the green-and-white a commanding 6-1 lead and the win.

Griffin (1-1) pitched six innings, allowing just one hit, a solo home run to right by Josh Dabbs (2) in the fourth, to earn the win. The Houston native struck out seven Falcon batters, while walking three.

Sophomore Brent Hallmark worked the final three innings for the save. The New Hope native retired 6-of-7 batters faced, while striking out four.

John Michael Carraway (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Falcons, working 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits.

Cade Hoggard led the Statesmen at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double. Taylor finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Statesmen return to action on Saturday, as Delta State hosts Drury University for a doubleheader at Ferriss Field. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. Sunday's single game is set for 1 p.m.
