No. 13 Statesmen complete series sweep with 4-3 win at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - After scoring 24 wins in the Saturday sweep of No. 17 West Alabama (8-6), the No. 13 Statesmen (11-2-1) of Delta State University settled in for an old fashioned pitcher's duel, claiming a 4-2 win in the series finale on Sunday at Tartt Field. The win gives the Statesmen the series sweep.

In the third and final game of the series between the Statesmen and Tigers, Delta State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of third off UWA starter Colton Millican. Josh Gordon delivered an RBI single to left, plating Matt Discon, who singled to lead off the inning. Cade Hoggard delivered a sac-fly RBI in the inning as well.

Statesmen starter Cody Kelley held the lead for the Statesmen until the bottom of the sixth. In the sixth, UWA's Brian Simone tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run home run over the right field wall.

The Statesmen reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh, 3-2, as freshman designated-hitter Michael Vinson delivered an RBI single to center, scoring Michael Niemann from third.

DSU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, as Vinson delivered a triple down the left field line. Brancey Cummins came into the game to run for Vinson and on the next at-bat, Patrick Taylor delivered a sac-fly RBI to make it 4-2.

West Alabama made a valiant attempt in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of one-out singles. After a sac-bunt moved the runners into scoring position with two outs, Statesmen reliever Brent Hallmark (3) struck out Bryan Mason to seal the win and record the save.

Kelley (2-0), a senior from Louisville, turned in one of his best performances of the year, working 7.2 innings and allowing just two runs on six hits to earn the win. The crafty righthander also recorded a season-high eight strikeouts.

Millican (1-1) took the loss, tossing 6.2 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.

Matt Discon went 4-for-4 to lead DSU at the plate. Gordon and Vinson both finished the day 2-for-5 with an RBI.

UWA's Collin Keen went 2-for-4, while Simone finished 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

The Statesmen return to action on Tuesday, as DSU travels to North Alabama for a two game mid-week series. Game times are set for 3 p.m. both days.
