Branstetter tosses six shutout innings to lead No. 15 Statesmen to 11-1 win over Falcons

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Freshman right-hander Josh Branstetter (3-2) tossed six shutout innings to power the No. 15 ranked Statesmen (31-10-1) of Delta State University to an 11-0 victory over the Falcons (12-32) of the University of Montevallo at Kermit Johnson Field. The win completes the season sweep for the Statesmen, as DSU took all four games.

After three scoreless innings, the Statesmen took control of the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Josh Gordon (6) and a two-run home run by Michael Vinson (2). Chris Escobar and Matt Discon also delivered RBI singles to right and left respectively.

Delta State tacked on five runs on seven hits and batted around for the second time in the game in the seventh to take a commanding 10-0 lead. Gordon got the green machine rolling with a one-out double off the left field wall.

After Gordon swiped third, the senior scored the first run of the inning on an RBI-groundout by Hoggard. Rickey Ware singled to right and Chase Blanchard brought in Hoggard from third. After an infield single by Hunter Palasini, Escobar slapped Michael Fields' offering down the right field line brining in Ware and Blanchard.

The offense kept coming in the eighth for the Statesmen. Kyle Morris, pinch-hitting for Gordon, smashed a ground-rule double to right-center to lead off the inning. Vinson brought in his third run of the day, as the freshman smashed an RBI single to right to put DSU up 11-0.

Montevallo finally put a run on the board in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Toby Easterly, as Chandler Tyree drove in Kevin Garcia from third.

Branstetter (3-2) worked six shutout innings, scattering seven hits and striking out five for the win. Coach Mike Kinnison also used Coty Saranthus and Brent Hallmark, who pitched one shutout inning each, and Toby Easterly, who allowed one run on two hits in the ninth.

Michael Vinson paced the Statesmen at the dish, finishing 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, double and three RBIs. Escobar was 2-for-4 with three RBIs as well.

In all, the Statesmen had six different batters drive in runs, including Discon (1), Gordon (1) and Blanchard (1).

The Statesmen will host Arkansas Tech University for a three game Gulf South Conference series this weekend at Ferriss Field. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m., while Sunday's single game is set for 2 p.m.

The series will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network starting 15 minutes prior to first pitch with the “SouthGroup Insurance Dugout Report.” Matt Jones and Jimmy Smith will have the call.
