Lady Statesmen nip Freed-Hardeman

CLEVELAND-After dropping a one goal decision to Spring HIll in its previous game, the Delta State University women's soccer team used a Heather Martinez penalty kick to defeat Freed Hardeman 1-0 Saturday at Delta Field.

The Lady Statesmen (3-4) used rugged defense to hold FHU (6-2-1) to only four shots on goal in the shutout.

DSU recorded only six shots on goal, but Heather Martinez scored her first goal of the season with a penalty kick in the 50th minute that proved to be the game winner.

Lady Statesmen goalkeeper Faith Wright picked up her second shutout of the season in the win.

The match was the final non-conference tuneup before the opening match of Gulf South Conference play.

The Lady Statesmen will host Ouachita Baptist on Friday Sept. 24 at Delta Field.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Admission is free, and everyone is encouraged to attend.
