Box Score CLEVELAND – The No.3/No.6 ranked Delta State Statesmen capped off Pig Pickin' weekend with a decisive 45-14 victory over No. 25 ranked Ouachita Baptist Tigers.
Micah Davis led the Statesmen (5-1) with 242 yards passing and two touchdowns along with 49 yards rushing and two scores on the ground.
The Delta State offense totaled 562 yards while the defense gave up only 180 yards to the Ouachita Baptist.
The Statesmen got the scoring started early with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Davis to
Bill Franks less than five minutes into game.
Franks finished with 99 yards receiving on three catches.
Ouachita Baptist (3-1) answered back with a touchdown pass of its own and took a 14-10 lead midway through the second quarter when Dijon Benton intercepted a Davis pass and returned it for the score.
Matt Dean had a 43-yard field goal for the Statesmen between the Tigers two scores.
It was all Statesmen after that as
Brant Botill put the Statesmen in the lead for good with a 6-yard touchdown run with 5:21 remaining in the first half.
The Statesmen had more in mind for the first half and with 1:33 left in the half, Davis connected with Franks again for a 33-yard touchdown. The Statesmen carried the 10-point lead into the half.
In the third quarter, Davis rushed for a pair of touchdowns, capping off 65 and 89-yard drives. Davies rushed in from a yard out to put the Statesmen up 31-14 and then from nine yards out to go up 38-14.
The Statesmen defense added the dagger at the start of the fourth quarter when
C.J. Lester picked off a Casey Cooper pass and returned it 15 yards for the final score of the game.
Bryce McBride led all Statesmen in rushing with 72 yards on five carries.
Chance Dennis also had 100 yards receiving on eight catches.
Melvin Griffin and
Ixavier Triplett led the Statesmen on defense with five tackles each. Griffin also had an interception.
Robbie Mayers had four tackles and a sack on the defensive front.
The Statesmen will be back in action Thursday night as they host Arkansas-Monticello at Parker Field at McCool Stadium. The game will be the GSC-TV Live game of the week and will start at 7 p.m.
