Lady Statesmen done in by late Alabama-Huntsville goal

Box Score CLEVELAND—The Lady Statesmen soccer team celebrated senior day Friday, as they recognized lone senior Sam Bossert before the match. Unfortunately for the Lady Statesmen, Alabama-Huntsville put a late goal on the board, and came away with the 1-0 victory.

Both teams had opportunities at putting points on the board in first half, but no one could find the back of the net. Both the Lady Statesmen (3-9, 0-5 GSC), and the Lady Chargers took six shots in the first half.

The Lady Chargers (4-7-2, 2-1-1 GSC) outshot the Lady Statesmen 11-3 in the final 45 minutes. Then in the 87th minute, Huntsville finished off an opportunity for the only goal of the match.  Khadijah Jannah scored her sixth goal of the season, which helped the Lady Chargers gain the victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Elling once again played well for the Lady Statesmen despite giving up the late goal. Elling kept the game close throughout by making seven saves. Lady Charger Iris Gunnarsdottir picked up the clean sheet making six saves along the way.

Thus far the Lady Statesmen have dropped all five of their Gulf South Conference matches by the score of 1-0. Conference play does not get any easier for the Lady Statesmen, as they will take on West Florida on Sunday. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m., and it is available on the Statesmen Sports Network.
