Box Score CLEVELAND—The Lady Statesmen soccer team went into Sunday's match against West Florida looking for their first conference win. Unfortunately, West Florida showed their prowess as they came away with a 9-1 victory.
The Argonauts (10-2-2, 5-0 GSC) got on the board quickly. Monica Malavassi scored off an assist from Tina Murray. Malavassi then found the back of the net again in the 17th minute of the match.
Already up 2-0, West Florida kept on the offensive during the first half. In the 18th minute, Tina Murray put the ball past Lady Statesmen keeper
Kelsey Elling, as the Argonauts took a 3-0 lead. West Florida capped off their first half with a goal by Aveann Douglas in the 21st minute of play.
West Florida scored six goals in the final 45 minutes. Malavassi picked up the hat trick with her third goal of the match in the 48th minute. Murray added her second goal in the 51st minute. Aveann Douglas scored in the 58th minute, and Jordan Stone put the ball in the back of the net in the 78th minute. Meredith Testa finished up the scoring for West Florida in the 86th minute.
The Lady Statesmen (3-10, 0-6 GSC) picked up a late goal on a penalty kick. After a handball was called in the box on West Florida, sophomore midfielder
Charlotte Benson scored on the penalty kick in the 89th minute.
The Lady Statesmen were out shot by the Argonauts 24-to-3, as 13 of West Florida's shots were on goal compared to one for Delta State.
The Lady Statesmen look to rebound next week with a road trip to Arkansas. They will play Harding on Friday, and follow that up with Ouachita Baptist on Sunday.
