Lady Statesmen knock off Lady Tigers 1-0

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—The Lady Statesmen soccer team used a late goal to defeat Ouachita Baptist 1-0 Sunday afternoon. The victory put an end to a three game slide for the Lady Statesmen.

The first half went by without either team getting on the board. The Lady Tigers (5-9, 2-3 GAC); outshot the Lady Statesmen 10-0 in the first half. Freshmen goalkeeper Kelsey Elling turned away five of those shots for the Lady Statesmen (4-11, 0-6 GSC); to keep the game scoreless.

The second half was more of the same, as the Tigers kept the pressure on the Lady Statesmen defense. Then in the 83rd minute, The Lady Statesmen took the shot that mattered as they scored the game-winning goal.

Freshman forward Kellie Hendle scored her first goal of the season off an assist by sophomore forward Payten Pearson. The Lady Statesmen held on after the late goal to come away with the 1-0 victory.

The Lady Tigers took 23 shots in the match, while the Lady Statesmen took two. Elling finished the match with 11 saves in the “clean sheet” shutout. Whitley Hope allowed one goal, and made one save for the Lady Tigers.

The referee booked one player during the match. Elling was shown a yellow card by the referee in the 52nd minute.

The Lady Statesmen now head home as they prepare for the final week of their season. They will play their final match at Delta Field this season against Pikeville College on Wednesday. The match will get underway at 11 a.m., and will be available on the Statesmen Sports Network. The Lady Statesmen will then finish up the season in Memphis, as they take on Christian Brothers this Saturday at 1 p.m.
