Box Score CLEVELAND—The Lady Statesmen soccer teamed played their last home match of the regular season Wednesday afternoon, as they took on the University of Pikeville. The Lady Statesmen led wire-to-wire, and routed the Lady Bears 6-0.
The scoring barrage started in the first half for the Lady Statesmen (5-11, 0-6 GSC). Freshman defender
Kayla Kazanowski scored her first goal of the season in the 28th minute. Sophomore
Payten Pearson assisted Kazanowski on the goal. Less than five minutes later junior midfielder
Hilary Ladner scored to put the Lady Statesmen up 2-0. The goal was Ladner's second of the season, and junior forward
Jackie Kelly picked up the assist. The Lady Statesmen rounded out the first half with a goal in the 43rd minute. Junior Midfielder
Melinda Esplin-DiRaimo scored from just outside the box from an assist by junior defender
Angela Palazzolo.
Up 3-0 going into the half, the Lady Statesmen made a goalie change. Freshman keeper
Kelsey Elling made one save in the first half, and freshman
Sian Jenkins came in for the second half. Jenkins made one save as well.
The scoring continued for the Lady Statesmen in the second half. Kelly scored off an assist by junior midfielder
Michelle Laurenzi in the 59th minute. Sophomore midfielder
Charlotte Benson then put the ball into the back of the net in the 75th minute off an assist from Ladner. Sophomore defender
Jessie Reeder rounded out the scoring for Delta State with a goal in the 90th minute.
Pikeville (6-8-2) could not get much going on offense, as they took five shots in the match compared to 24 for the Lady Statesmen. Six goals in the match were the most scored in a one game for Lady Statesmen this season. Also, the six goals are the most scored by the squad in one match since the 2008 season.
The Lady Statesmen will finish up their 2011 season this Saturday as they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to face Christian Brothers University. The match will get underway at 1:00 p.m.
