HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The No. 25 ranked Statesmen (4-4) of Delta State University and the Chargers (9-5) of the University of Alabama-Huntsville split a midweek doubleheader Tuesday at Charger Park with UAH taking game one 3-1 and DSU claiming the finale 11-1.
After taking a 1-0 lead on
Kellen Bozeman's solo home run to left center, the Statesmen struggled once again to get out of the first inning, allowing three runs to the Chargers on a two RBI double by Jordan Parker. The three runs proved to be all UAH needed en route to the 3-1 victory.
The Statesmen actually out hit the Chargers 5-2 in game one, but never found away to push across another run. DSU finished the game with one run on five hits with one error, while UAH scored three runs on two hits with an error.
Lance Gibson (1-1) threw 6.0 innings allowing one run on five hits to earn the win. Cody Barrett (1) worked a scoreless seventh to nail down the win and the save for UA-Huntsville.
Andrew Lytle (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on two hits. The junior worked 4.1 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
David Mooney (0.1) and
Brent Hallmark (1.1) also worked in relief.
Lytle settled down after the first and didn't allow another UAH hit over his final 3.1 innings. Mooney and Hallmark continued the hitless stretch for the Chargers in the sixth and seventh innings.
Besides Bozeman's home run, the Statesmen collected hits from
Michael Niemann,
Brent Kakwitch (2B),
Will McGinnis and
Craig Hermann.
Parker's double and a Grant DeBruin RBI-single were the only hits of the day for the Chargers and both came in the first inning.
The Statesmen offense finally came alive in game two, as the green-and-white erupted for six runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. After a hit-by-pitch to Hermann and a double to right by
Anthony Even,
Michael Niemann laced a two-RBI double to right center for the first runs of the game for DSU.
Brent Kakwitch would walk to put runners at first and third for the Statesmen and Bozeman quickly responded with a double down the left field line to score Niemann. Cameron Robulak kept the scoring streak rolling with a two-RBI single to center. Herrman came back up for DSU with two outs and delivered an RBI single to center to close out the inning.
DSU added two more runs in the fourth on an error and RBI single from
Michael Vinson to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
UAH finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to Eric Deese's RBI single to center scoring Grant DeBruin from second.
The Statesmen tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth on a Vinson solo home run to center and a two-RBI double by
Patrick Strack to take an 11-1 lead that proved to be the final.
Aaron Newcomb (2-1) picked up the win for DSU after throwing five innings of one run baseball. The junior allowed five hits on the day with four strikeouts.
Garrett Pickens worked a scoreless sixth and seventh to close out the game for the Statesman bullpen.
Drew Eiland (0-1) gave up six earned runs in 2.1 innings to earn the loss.
Bozeman went 3 for 5 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI to lead the Statesmen. Niemann, Vinson, Robulak and Strack all drove in two runs each.
The Statesmen travel to Columbus, Ga., this Friday and Saturday for a three game series with No. 18 Columbus State. Saturday's doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m. with Sunday's first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. as well.
