Statesmen and Lions split Tuesday doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND – The Delta State University Statesmen (5-8) and the No. 27 University of North Alabama Lions (12-4) split a Tuesday doubleheader at Ferriss Field. DSU took game one 10-6 with UNA rallying for a 4-2 game two victory.

The Statesmen rallied from a 6-3 deficit scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth that propelled Delta State to a 10-6 victory in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader at Ferriss Field.

Six different Statesmen drove in runs in the game, including Cameron Robulak, who finished with three RBIs after going 4 for 5 at the plate. Kellen Bozeman was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBIs as well. Michael Niemann, Will McGinnis, Michael Vinson and Brent Kakwitch all closed the game with one RBI.

Josh Cyr and Jake Sloan delivered two RBIs each to lead UNA.

Brent Hallmark (1-0) earned the win out of the pen, coming in with the bases loaded and no one out in the sixth. The junior from New Hope recorded three straight outs to end the jam and preserve the Statesman lead. He pitched the final two innings allowing no runs or hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Casey Jones (0-1) took the loss for UNA after allowing four runs in 1.2 innings pitched.

In game two, the Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on Josh Cyr's RBI single to center.

Delta State cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the six, as Bozeman and Robulak came around to score on Vinson's two-RBI double to right center.

UNA tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, as J.P. LaMunyon's RBI double brought in Chandler Guy.

Jake Sloan picked up the win for UNA, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Joel Sessions earned the save with two innings of relief.

Josh Branstetter (0-1) was saddled with the loss for DSU.

The Statesmen will hit the road for a three-game series at Stillman College over the weekend in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. with Sunday's single game also scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
