Box Score MAGNOLIA, Ark. - The Delta State University Statesmen (10-9) completed play in the Southern Arkansas University Mulerider Classic with an 11-1 run-rule victory over the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers (9-11) on Sunday at Mulerider Field.
Sophomore right-hander
Josh Branstetter (2-1) kept the potent OBU offense off balance all day, earning the victory after pitching 6.0 innings for the Statesmen. The Pensacola, Fla., native allowed one run on just four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Statesmen jumped on OBU starter Taylor Burns (2-1) early and often, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom fo the first. With
Michael Niemann and
Will McGinnis safely on base, Cameron Robulak launched a moon shot over the right-center field wall to put the Statesmen up 3-0.
DSU tacked on a run in the second, as
Anthony Even came home to score on Niemann's sac-fly RBI. Even doubled to leadoff the inning and freshman shortstop
Justin Badon singled to center to move hin to third.
OBU tried to make a game of it in the fourth, as Kyle Zimmerman came in to score on Brock Green's fielder's choice.
DSU answered right back, plating three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead. The Statesmen crossed the plate three times in the frame without a hit, thanks to two Tiger errors.
After a scoreless fifth, the Statesmen slammed the door in the sixth with four runs on five hits, including RBIs by McGinnis, Kakwitch, Bozeman and Taylor.
Jeffrey Vance would come in to pitch the seventh for the Statesmen and he made quick work of the Tigers to closeout the green-and-white win.
Michael Vinson led the Statesmen with three hits on the day, while Robulak (4) and Bozeman (2) drove in multiple runs for DSU.
Sam McGill led OBU with a pair of hits.
The Statesmen return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 16, as DSU hosts Quincy University. The doubleheader is slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch and the game will be broadcasted on the Statesmen Sports Network starting at 1:45 p.m.
