Statesmen shoo away Hawks 3-2 and 10-1

CLEVELAND, Miss.
Michael Niemann drove in six runs and Justin Badon delivered his first game-winning RBIs to power the Delta State University Statesmen to a doubleheader sweep of the Quincy University Hawks 3-2 and 6-1 on Wednesday at Ferriss Field. The Statesmen improved to 12-9 on the year while the Hawks slipped to 3-8.

After three scoreless innings, Michael Vinson's RBI single down the right field line put the Statesmen on top 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, as Kellen Bozeman came in to score.

The Hawks answered in the top of the fifth, as Gavin Meyer singled to right center to score Mitchell Broughton from second.

Tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Michael Niemann delivered a two-RBI single to right center, scoring Patrick Strack and Anthony Even, to put the Statesmen back up 3-1.

The Hawks cut it to a one run deficit in the sixth on Broughton's RBI single to left, scoring Justin Dunning from second.

Garrett Pickens (1-0) earned the win in relief. The junior from Yazoo City worked 2.1 innings while allowing one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. David Mooney started the game for the Statesmen, pitching 4.2 innings allowing one run on one hit with four walks and a strikeout.

Chris Conner (0-2) took the loss for the Hawks. The junior from Lenexa, Kan., allowed three runs on five hits with a walk. Travis Ruppel pitched 1.2 innings of relief while giving up two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Brent Kakwitch, Vinson and Anthony Even all recorded two hit games for the Statesmen, while Meyer, Dunning, Broughton and Daniel Entzeroth all had one hit each for the Hawks.

The Hawks struck first in game two in the second on a bases loaded walk to Trent Taglierini, which allowed Jacob Birlingmar to score from third.

The Statesmen finally erupted for six runs in the fifth, as Justin Badon delivered a two-RBI single to left and Michael Niemann smashed a two-RBI double off the right field wall. Bozeman added to the big inning with an RBI double down the right field line to score Niemann. Vinson closed the scoring for the Statesmen with an RBI single to left. All six runs came off two Quincy relievers, Mitchell Fairley and Brian Thompson.

Delta State tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth on an error by the Hawks, a two-RBI double from Niemann, his second of the game, and an RBI single left by pinch-hitter Brent Langston.

Jeffrey Vance (1-0) picked up the win with four scoreless innings of relief of sophomore starter Jordan Moore, who allowed a run in two innings. Vance, a senior from Water Valley gave up two hits with six strikeouts. Brent Hallmark worked a scoreless seventh to close out the game and the 10-1 win.

The Statesmen finished with 10 runs on 11 hits with an error, while the Hawks plated one run on six hits with three errors.

Niemann went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Badon finished the game 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.

The Statesmen host Arkansas-Monticello this Saturday and Sunday in the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams. Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m. with Sunday's single game starting at 2 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network with Matt Jones and Jimmy Smith on the call.
