SAU claims series finale 11-3 over DSU; Statesmen take series 2-1

Box Score MAGNOLIA, Ark. - With a series sweep on the line, the No. 20 Southern Arkansas Muleriders (18-9, 3-3 GSC) rallied to salvage the series finale with an 11-3 victory over the Delta State University Statesmen (17-11, 5-1 GSC) Sunday at Mulerider Field. DSU claimed the series courtesy of Saturday doubleheader sweep 7-6 and 10-0.

The Statesmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the Muleriders in the top of the first on Cameron Robulak's RBI single to right. The hit scored Kellen Bozeman from second, who doubled to left.

After a leadoff double by Brandon Choate to start the fourth, Trevor Rogers' sac-fly RBI to center scored Choate, who had advanced to third on a pass ball, tying the game at 1-1.

The Muleriders took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on Logan Williams' two-RBI double to right, scoring Adam Boucher and Gavan McCauley. SAU had loaded the bases with only one out thanks to two walks from DSU starter Aaron Newcomb.

With Pat Johnson at third and Williams at second, DSU head coach Mike Kinnison brought Jeffrey Vance in from the bullpen. The junior from Water Valley coaxed a pop up from Choate to center that fell between three defenders, scoring Johnson from third. He ended the inning by getting Harrison to foul out to Bozeman and a groundout by Jason Dahl.

The Statesmen made it a one run game in the sixth, as Patrick Taylor singled home Michael Vinson and Brent Kakwitch. The two RBI single made it a 4-3 game.

The Muleriders put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, plating seven runs on four hits to take an eight-run lead, 11-3. The seven runs came off four Statesmen pitchers, including two runs walked in with the bases loaded.

Joey Cifuentes (3-0) picked up the win for the Muleriders. The junior right-hander scattered eight hits, allowing three runs in the complete game win.

Aaron Newcomb (4-4) took the loss for the Statesmen after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 4.1 innings pitched, Brent Hallmark, Jeffrey Vance, Tim Maloney and Nathan Hardy all worked in relief.

Bozeman and Taylor led the Statesmen at the plate with two hits each on the day.

Choate had his second three-hit game against the Statesmen, including a pair of RBIs.
