Statesmen Sweep Abilene in Double-Header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas—The Delta State Statesmen (19-11) took home a pair of wins in a double-header against Abilene Christian (17-13) on Wednesday, March 30 defeating the Wildcats 6-3 in game one and 6-1 in game two at Crutcher Scott Field.

In game one, the Statesmen wasted no time by putting up two runs in the top of the first inning. Michael Vinson singled to center, scoring Kellen Bozeman from third and Brent Kakwitch from second.

ACU threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the second after J. Roland singled to left scoring A. Williams. But the green-and-white defense stopped the Wildcats in their tracks, shutting down the inning with a double play.

In the top of the fourth, the Statesmen put two more runs in the books: Jon Carnahan scored from third on a wild pitch. Immediately following the pitching error, Justin Badon singled to center field, scoring Craig Hermann from second.

The Statesmen put up a run in the fifth and the seventh inning while the Wildcats could not score. ACU had eight hits but left three men on base.

David Mooney (1-0) pitched a complete game to earn the win, giving up three runs on eight hits.

Michael Vinson finished the first game with one hit and two RBI's. Kellen Bozeman and Justin Badon each had a pair of hits with one RBI apiece.

In the second game, the Statesmen took a one run lead in the top of the second off a Craig Hermann sac fly, scoring Cameron Robulack from third.

Both teams starting pitchers, Ernie Triplett for DSU and J. Harris for ACU, pitched 3.1 innings.

However, a two-run fourth gave DSU all the runs they needed as they added a run in the sixth and two insurance runs in the seventh for the, 6-1 win.

Ernie Triplett (1-0) got the win for the Statesmen while J. Harris got his third loss of the season (0-3).

Patrick Taylor finished out the contest with three hits and two RBI's.

The Statesmen will hit the diamond on Saturday, April 2 for a Gulf South Conference matchup against Christian Brothers University. The double-header is set to begin at 3:00 at Ferris Field.
