Box Score 2 TUSCALOOSA – The Stillman College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Delta State University on Sunday afternoon, losing 6-1 and 11-4 on a blustery day at Stillman Park.
Delta State (7-8) got solid starts from
Aaron Newcomb and
Brandon Hardin to secure the sweep. Newcomb (3-2) tossed a complete game in the opener for the Statesmen. He allowed one run on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Hardin (1-2) allowed two runs on two hits in five innings in the nightcap with two walks and five strikeouts.
While DSU got stellar pitching, the hitting was even more impressive as the Statesman scored 17 runs on 21 hits in the two games.
In game one, DSU led 3-1 after five innings and then put the game away with a three-run seventh inning.
Michael Niemann had an RBI triple and
Cameron Robulack swatted a solo home run to give DSU the cushion. Niemann scored three runs to pace the DSU offense in the opener. Shortstop Craig Herrmann added two hits and one RBI and scored one run.
Stillman's lone run came in the first inning when centerfielder Dion Bryant stroked a leadoff double and later scored on Jarius Brown's ground out.
Newcomb held the Tigers scoreless over the final 6 2/3 innings.
Austin Leary (2-2) also pitched a complete game for Stillman. He was charged with six runs (four earned) on seven hits in the loss.
The Statesmen stayed hot in the nightcap, scoring eight runs in the first three innings to take an 8-0 lead. DSU scored five times in the first inning off losing pitcher Jarrett Davis.
Kellen Bozeman started the scoring with an RBI single to give Delta State a 1-0 lead.
Patrick Taylor added an RBI double and
Michael Vinson followed with a two-run double.
Patrick Strack capped the inning with an RBI single.
Taylor finished the game with four hits, including a pair of doubles to pace the 14-hit attack. Bozeman added three hits and two RBI while Niemann and Strack had two hits apiece.
Davis (0-2) was charged with eight runs on nine hits in three innings for the Tigers.
Stillman scored two runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Josh Beal led the way with two hits and two RBIs. Ryan Erbe also added a run-scoring single.
Bryant had hits in both games to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
The Statesmen return to Ferriss Field on Wednesday, March 9, as DSU plays host to Mississippi Valley State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
