Statesmen fall 11-10 in series finale at Harding; DSU in three-way tie for GSC West lead

Box Score SEARCY, Ark. – The No. 19-ranked Bisons of Harding University (36-10, 13-5 GSCW) claimed an 11-10 come-from-behind win over the Statesmen (28-16, 13-5 GSCW) of Delta State University in the bottom of the ninth inning on Matt Calhoun's two-RBI single to right center Saturday at Jerry Moore Field. The loss for DSU puts the Statesmen in a three-way tie for the Gulf South Conference West Division lead with the Bisons and Arkansas Tech. The Statesmen, however, hold the tiebreaker with both clubs after claiming series victories.

Craig Herrmann's bunt sacrifice on a squeeze play put the Statesmen up 1-0 in the top of the second off Bisons starter Logan Holthaus. Michael Vinson led off the inning with a single to left center. Brent Kakwitch followed with a single to right, but a missed cutoff throw allowed him to take second and Vinson third.

Delta State made it a 3-0 lead in the third with a pair of two out, RBI hits from Kellen Bozeman, a double to right scoring Michael Niemann, and a single to right by Vinson scoring Bozeman.

Harding finally got on the board in the bottom of the third as Paul Anzalone roped an RBI single to left off DSU starter Brandon Hardin cut the lead to 3-1.

The Statesmen got the run back in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Cameron Robulack led off the inning with a double to right, but a throwing error by HU's Trent Kinnear allowed the junior to advance to third. Herrmann followed with an RBI single to center to extend the lead back to three runs.

Matt Calhoun's three-run home run to right field powered the Bisons to four runs in the fourth that allowed Harding to take a 5-4 lead off Hardin. It was the only hit in the inning, but DSU allowed two runners to reach base on errors by Herrmann and Chris Escobar.

DSU came right back in the top of the fifth to tie it at 5-5 on Kakwitch's RBI single to right, scoring Bozeman from third.

Jason Nappi's first hit of the series proved to be a big one, as the senior connected on a three-run home run to right field putting Harding back up 8-5.

Bozeman delivered with two outs again for the Statesmen, smashing a three RBI double to left center to tie the game up at 8-8. Vinson smashed a chopper off the glove of the Bisons' first baseman Matt Calhoun that allowed Bozeman to score from second and put the green-and-white on top 9-8 off HU reliever Donny Stephens.

DSU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on Chris Escobar's RBI single to right center, scoring Jon Carnahan, who doubled with two out, from second to take the 10-8 lead.

HU used a pair of doubles in the bottom of the eighth to scratch back to within a run. A leadoff double by Calhoun, his second extra-base hit of the game, allowed Anthony Gugliemi's pinch-hit double off the left field wall to score the runner from second. DSU's David Mooney battled back and retired the side to preserve the 10-9 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Calhoun's two-RBI single to right center with the bases loaded allowed the Bisons to come-from-behind and claim the winning run 11-10.

Mooney (2-2) took the loss for DSU after throwing five innings of relief, while Bronson Smith (4-3) swiped the win in relief in the ninth.

Calhoun's day ended 3 for 4 with five RBIs on a double and three-run home run.

Bozeman put together another 4 for 5 day with four RBIs on three doubles to pace the Statesmen. Vinson, Kakwitch and Carnahan also connected on a pair of hits for Delta State.

The Statesmen will face the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University on Tuesday, April 26 in Itta Bena. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Delta Devils Field. Jimmy Smith and J.T. Webb will have the call beginning at 3:45 p.m. on the Statesmen Sports Network.
