Lady Statesmen drop conference opener to West Georgia

Box Score Carrollton, Ga.-- The Lady Statesmen hit the road to open conference play as they took on West Georgia Friday night. Unfortunately for the Lady Statesmen, the Lady Wolves scored a second half goal en route to a 1-0 victory.

The Lady Statesmen (2-5, 0-1 GSC) could not muster much offense in the first half as they did not record a single shot. The Lady Wolves (3-4, 1-0 GSC), posted 13 shots in the opening 45 minutes.

The game remained scoreless as the second half got underway. Then in the 60th minute the Lady Wolves broke the deadlock. Cary Powell headed the ball into the back of the net, and scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Kate Marnock. That would be all that West Georgia would need as they came away with the win.

The Lady Statesmen took nine shots in the second half with five being on target. The Lady Wolves came away with 21 shots with 10 being on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Elling made nine saves in the game for the Lady Statesmen.

Delta State will look for their first conference win of the season as they now travel to Valdosta State for a Sunday match. The match gets underway at 1 p.m. in Valdosta, Ga.
